    First polio case of the year surfaces in Karachi

    KARACHI:
    A three-year-old child in Karachi has been diagnosed with the crippling polio disease, a first in the city since the beginning of the year.

    Aijaz Khan, son of Sher Ali Khan, is 34 months old and having the onset of paralysis, confirmed by a Karachi-based laboratory. According to the Aijaz?s parents, he had missed two OPV doses through routine immunisation.

    However, more than seven doses had been dispensed to him during supplementary immunisation activities since the child?s birth and prior to the onset of his weakness, sources told The Express Tribune.

    The child belongs to a Pashtun family of the Mohmand tribe and lives in Yousuf Goth of Surjani Town in the city?s west...

      Polio worker shot and injured in Lahore

      LAHORE: Unidentified gunmen shot and injured a polio worker in Lahore on Wednesday, the latest in a string of attacks against eradication teams.

      According to initial reports, two men on a motorcycle opened fire on the vaccinators and ran away.

      A health worker was hit by the bullet in his leg and was rushed to hospital, where he was in stable condition...

            PESHAWAR: Two more polio cases were reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday, taking the total number of polio cases to three in the province this year.

            Senior officials of the provincial Health Department told The News that one male child tested positive with polio in the provincial capital and another case was reported from Hangu district.

            The child in Peshawar was identified as Jareer, son of Waliullah. He is 21-month old and belongs to a religious family living in Peshawar’s Haider Colony in Akhunabad.

              Health officials on Thursday confirmed from Jacobabad district this year?s second polio case from Sindh, taking the total number of cases in Pakistan to six.

              Eighteen-month-old Noor Fatima from Union Council Lashari, Jacobabad district, contracted the virus even though she was administered the polio vaccine seven times during polio eradication drives and twice as part of routine immunisation, health authorities said.

                Polio worker seriously injured in firing

                SHIKARPUR - One lady health worker (LHW) was seriously injured in firing by a few armed men.

                She came under attack when she was returning home after administering polio drops at village Koreja in Garhi Yasin police precincts on Wednesday.

                According to reports, some armed culprits opened fires on the LHW namely Afshan, wife of Mehtab Mahar, when she was coming back on a motorcycle with her brother after performing the polio duty.
                She received serious bullet injuries while the assailants fled from the scene...

                      Armed men have gunned down a health official supervising an antipolio drive in Pakistan's lawless tribal areas.

                      The incident occurred on March 26 in the Khyber tribal district, among seven located along the porous border with Afghanistan.

                      Local officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal that 40-year-old Akhtar Khan was in his clinic in Khyber's Lwargi area when armed men opened fire and killed him on the spot.

                            SHIKARPUR Apr 29: Within a month 2nd polio virus case has been reported to a four and half years old boy in a village Panah Shujrah, union council Shabirabad Tehsil Khanpur district Shikarpur test conducted by National Institute of Health [NIH] Islamabad on Friday.
                            According to reports, a four and half years old boy identified as Ashiq Hussain son of Ghulam Muhammad Jatoi had paralyzed from a leg and an arm, therefore through the District Health Officer [DHO] Shikarpur collected samples of victim boy, which sent to National Institute of Health [NIH] Islamabad for examination some fifteen days back.
