    Polio in Somalia: UN warns of 'explosive' outbreak

    The UN has warned of a severe outbreak of polio in Somalia, days after a medical charity pulled out of the country, citing insecurity.

    At least 105 cases of polio have been recorded in Somalia this year - almost half the number of cases around the world in 2012.

    The World Health Organization is trying to eradicate polio and the number of cases has fallen dramatically.

    Most of the Somali cases are in areas controlled by Islamist group al-Shabab...

      11 new WPV1 cases were reported in the past week ? in previously infected districts in Kenya and Somalia, and in a previously unaffected country, Ethiopia. The total number of WPV1 cases for 2013 is 121 (108 from Somalia,12 from Kenya, 1 from Ethiopia). The most recent WPV1 case in the region had onset of paralysis on 14 July (from Kenya).

        SOMALIA: Puntland says first polio case found in the region
        RBC Radio

        Garowe (RBC) First polio case was found in the Somalia?s semi-autonomous region of Puntland, the region?s health minister said.
        Dr Ali Abdullahi Hersi, the Puntland health minister said that one child living in the port town of Bosasso was diagnosed and found with polio which means that other cases of polio could be found in the region.
        ?We can confirm that polio now exists in Puntland.? The minister said.

        20 new WPV1 cases were reported in the past week in Somalia and one in Kenya. The total number of WPV1 cases for 2013 is 142 (128 from Somalia, 13 from Kenya, 1 from Ethiopia). The most recent WPV1 case in the region had onset of paralysis on 30 July (from Somalia).
        The outbreak is spreading geographically in Somalia, with two new states reporting cases: Galgadud and Gedo. Anticipation of this spread has driven intense vaccination activities across the country, in an effort to raise immunity.
