29 polio cases confirmed in Afghanistan

KABUL: While the crippling disease of polio has been eradicated almost from the globe, 29 cases of the endemic virus have been confirmed in the war-ravaged country in 2006, spokesman of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said.
"The total of confirmed polio cases in Afghanistan in 2006 has reached 29," Aleem Siddique told newsmen at a regular press briefing.
Majority of these cases, he added, had been confirmed in the restive southern region of Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul and Uruzgan where Taliban-led insurgency has undermined rebuilding activities.
Afghanistan with the support of World Health Organization and UNICEF would launch a three-day country-wide National Immunization campaign from Nov. 19 to 21.
Under the campaign some 7.2 million children under the age of five will be given the immunization dose to eliminate polio from the war-wreckage central Asian state. Afghanistan is one of the only four countries in the world with endemic polio virus the others are India, Nigeria and Pakistan.
