    ISLAMABAD:

A seven-month old child in North Waziristan was diagnosed with polio on Tuesday, increasing the country?s polio toll to 12 cases this year.

According to official sources, the affected child, Bakhthullah, was not inoculated against polio because his father, Janullah, who lives in Mami-Rogha area of Miranshah had refused. The case has been confirmed by the National Institute of Health (NIH).

Health experts said this type of polio virus was previously found in the 14 cases previously registered in Waziristan, proving that the virus exists in the region...

Polio transmission continues on Pakistan-Afghanistan border

        March 16th, 2012

ISLAMABAD: Researchers have made valuable progress in identifying the genetic structure and transmission patterns of polio strains circulating along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, one of the remaining global reservoirs of the wild virus.

Virologists from the National Institute of Health in Islamabad screened more than 30,000 people living along the border between 2005 and 2007. They identified and sequenced 111 polioviruses, in an attempt to trace their origins and transmission routes.

The researchers isolated the virus from patients with Acute Flaccid Paralysis, a condition characterised by a sudden onset of muscle weakness, a common sign of polio.

The study, published in the Virology Journal last month (22 February), showed that, despite intense immunisation campaigns and efforts to reduce the number of cases, uncontrolled transmission of wild type1 polioviruses has continued in the region.

Salmaan Sharif, a co-author of the paper based at the NIH, told SciDev.Net the findings would help researchers and officials identify communities that are reservoirs for wild poliovirus, and design more targeted immunisation campaigns...

KP govt alerted against worsening polio situation
          Jamila Achakzai
          Saturday, March 17, 2012

ISLAMABAD: Alerting the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to the dangers of the vaccinators? failure to get access to the troubled Bara tehsil of Khyber Agency over the last two-and-a-half years, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended ?immediate and imperative? actions to ensure the province maintains Type-3 polio-free status and interrupt Type-1 poliovirus.

In a ?very urgent? communication a copy of which was provided to ?The News? by sources in the Provincial Health Department, WHO representative in Pakistan Dr Guido S?batinelli apprised Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Secretary Ghulam Dastagir on Thursday of the ?serious crisis in evolution in the province with imminent risk of polio outbreaks but opportunities to reach the un-reached,? saying he is compelled and obliged to draw his urgent attention toward the problem based on analysis of the surveillance and monitoring data in the current and historical context.

He said a preliminary report of the WHO polio eradication team, including a visit of the consultant, had also been considered in the suggestion.

According to Dr Guido, an exodus of population is happening from Bara as reflected in sudden up scaling of the registered displaced families at Jalozai camp in Nowshera district. Almost the entire Bara tehsil has no vaccination campaign since September 2009, and hence it has the most persistent (prolonged) outbreak of polio cases ever seen in Pakistan in such a circumscribed area.

There were 18 polio cases from Bara tehsil in 2010, 16 in 2011 and four in 2012 so far. It is the only place in Asia having Type-3 polio cases in 2011 and 2012. This is an extraordinary situation and requires extraordinary steps...

Polio virus getting out of control in KPK: experts
            Shahina Maqbool
            Saturday, March 24, 2012

Islamabad: As technical experts from all over the world gather in Islamabad for the annual meeting of the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) on Polio Eradication, credible voices in the health sector are advocating in favour of a full-fledged polio vaccination operation in Bara and Jallozai IDP camps as the only remaining option to arrest the crippling poliovirus.

They are convinced that unless the campaign covers every single individual of every age group, the situation may only get nastier for polio eradication partners.

This recommendation has come outside of the confines of TAG, and at a juncture when the window of opportunity to nab the poliovirus during the low transmission season, is fast closing.

Commenting on the urgent solutions needed to arrest the fast deteriorating situation of polio eradication in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Professor Dr. Anita Zaidi, chairperson of the Department of Paediatrics and Microbiology at the Aga Khan University (AKU), said: ?For every single case of polio in Pakistan, there are 200 silent infections that clinically remain undiagnosed.

The situation in Bara, where we have had 38 cases since 2010, poses a real threat to the global polio eradication initiative. Thirty-eight confirmed cases of polio means that there are 7,600 silent infections in that area. This silent spread of the polio virus can only be arrested if all people are immunised, regardless of their age...?

Polio emergency operation in Jallozai, Bara starts today
              Our correspondent
              Monday, March 26, 2012

              Islamabad

In a bid to save Peshawar from a possible outbreak of the crippling polio virus, the government of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has decided to vaccinate, on an emergency basis, all youngsters up to the age of 15 years in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP?s) camp in Jallozai.

Moreover, emergency transit polio check posts are being established on all routes leading out of Bara in response to a letter from the World Health Organization (WHO). The letter has expressed fears of the polio situation getting out of hand in KP and Peshawar due to heavy population movements from Bara to the Jallozai IDP?s camp.

?They are convinced that unless the campaign covers every single individual of every age group in Bara and Jallozai, especially children up to the age of 15 years, the situation may only get nastier for polio eradication,? confided an official of the provincial health department, KP.

According to the source, the chief secretary of KP has taken this step in view of recommendations of the recently-held meeting of the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) on Polio Eradication. The impetus also came from a red alert issued by the WHO, coupled with reports from renowned experts, declaring mass immunisation as the only remaining option to control the worsening polio crisis in KP...

The World Health Organisation?s warning in relation to the magnifying risk of poliovirus circulation in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, followed by a suo moto notice of the threat by the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court, has not had much of an effect. With Bara reporting yet another polio case on Monday ? the sixth in a row ? the polio virus is slowly but surely getting out of control in Khyber Agency, threatening thousands of children in Peshawar and Karachi as well.

?The Polio Virology Laboratory at the National Institute of Health has confirmed a Type-1 wild poliovirus case from Bara in Khyber Agency. This brings the total number of polio cases countrywide in 2012 so far to 16 from 10 districts,? informs Polio Alert, the official website of polio eradication in Pakistan.

Iqra, a 12-month old female child who experienced onset of paralysis on April 18, 2012, is the latest victim of the preventable disease. The child resides in village Sara Dand, area Forte Slope of tehsil Bara in Khyber Agency. More than a third of 64 sewage samples collected from high-risk zones in major cities and towns across the country by World Health Organisation (WHO) have tested positive for polio virus.

This was revealed in a quarterly report on polio alert issued by the WHO on Tuesday. The report comes on the heels of new polio case ? Pakistan?s 16th this year ? emerging in Khyber Agency.

According to the report, 26 samples tested positive for polio including seven out of 12 sewage samples collected from Lahore, seven out of eight in Peshawar, four out of seven in Gadap Town in Karachi, two out of four in Rawalpindi and two out of seven in Quetta.

Last year, 21 out of 24 samples tested positive for polio virus in Karachi?s Gadap Town, 19 out of 36 in Lahore, 21 out of 36 in Multan and 11 out of 12 in Rawalpindi.

The National Institute of Health has confirmed a Type-1 polio case from Khyber Agency in Fata. This is the 7th polio case so far this year from Khyber Agency, where a potential outbreak looms large in the absence of concrete measures to halt poliovirus transmission.

The new case has taken Pakistan?s national polio count to 17 from 10 districts and tribal agencies so far in 2012, informs Polio Alert, a website that seeks to inform journalists working on polio.

The latest case has been confirmed on June 1, 2012 from village Usai Khula Ghundi, area Ghundi of tehsil Jamrud in Khyber Agency. The affected child?s name is Salma, who is a 21-month old daughter of Allah Noor.
