A 50-year old man was not on the list of original patients (the only male was 40), so this would be a new one....

Update: Post #34 below claims this one, among others, is a hoax. The link also appears to be an aggregator, not the perpetrator of the hoax.

Re: South Korea - 8 patients reportedly with "mysterious" pneumonia - 7 are pregnant or recently delivered mothers

This is the incident in post #30. It's a different hospital, the four patients involved are children, the two that are still alive have come back positive for adenovirus and mycoplasma, and the time span is at least all of 2011, if not a full year.

This article does indicate a 20% surge in ARI cases, too.

'Unresolved pneumonia' in cough disappointed kids

Despite fears confirmed amplified region ... bijeonyeom pediatric patients seek hospital increased 20 percent

        <기사입력 : 2011-05-15 15:07> <김민영 기자> "Article Date: 2011-05-15 15:07>" Kim Min reporter>

Pneumonia of unknown cause in the epidemic but that turned out to ahnimyi There is growing anxiety of pediatric patients.

. Some hospitals in pediatric patients with pneumonia from unknown causes occurred more than usual, while a surge pundits being closely watched because the state.

Chungnam National University Hospital for a year, there was no existing lung or heart disease, 4 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome due to pneumonia and wounded were treated in the ICU.

. All four people can keep breathing with a respirator Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy (ECMO) was performed, left without a dual two patients died of unknown causative organisms. 2 patients currently dependent on a ventilator in intensive care is.

The patients were being treated by adenovirus infection and mycoplasma bacteria detected condition.

Pneumonia of unknown etiology such a sudden appearance of the disease occur each year, but appears to have a few.

. The problem of pediatric patients with acute respiratory distress occurs, the steady and high disease mortality, but usually 1-2 people in an outbreak that had five months to 4 people forty-two balbyeonghae experts are watching closely the biological basis of disease.

. Professor of Pediatrics, Chungnam National University Hospital gilhongryang "caveat, but especially due to pneumonia, cause disease can worsen symptoms, so if you receive treatment at the nearest hospital as soon as it is important," he advised.

A local hospital official said, "In the past, the incidence of pneumonia of unknown etiology was more. Did not reveal the causative organism of the map, "said" as a vague uneasiness is not a sudden occurrence occurring to the taker, "he said.

. Chungnam National University Hospital in the hospital except for the year, the incidence of pediatric patients with pneumonia of unknown etiology is not the state.

But patients' anxiety has not placated.

Children's Hospital in the light seems cold jeungsangman have heart attack patients who are vat flock.

Members of the War Department in the usual and more than 20% of pneumonia patients who complained of cough, cold and flu symptoms surged.

Find local Children's Hospital of Air (31, Yuseong Noeun) "The children are usually familiar with the hospital to cough, even if the media does not match the unknown etiology of pneumonia in the hospital, a news report can not be found" and "Many mothers around University Hospital 's rubbed on a light when the children find the fact that such great anxiety, "he said.

J Pediatric Hospital, the hospital "through the media of patients shivering in the fact that anxiety," said "now is time to pneumonia patients than usual even though there are many seasons to worry about patients who are often heard voices. 2 years ago, the situation seems to symbolize the flu, "he said.

Re: South Korea - 8 patients reportedly with "mysterious" pneumonia - 7 are pregnant or recently delivered mothers

This is a retraction in a Korean media source, reporting much of the above story as exaggerated.

In particular, the red text claims the report in post #32 really is a report of 50 deaths, not a 50-year-old man, but it is a hoax.

          'Unresolved pneumonia' exaggerated reports sorry

Unidentified pneumonia, highlighting the dangers of sensational coverage degrees are over.

The beginning of the incident were admitted to a university hospital intensive care unit patients with pneumonia, 7 out of 8 pregnant woman will be one of them was killed. 9 days reported by the media have begun to significantly is understandable.

The epidemic is spreading to new species or not you concerned that you might be years before the situation. However, reports of uneasiness that promotes clean up should be opened up by the 11th.

First, patients are not jipdanbalbyeonghan at the university hospital. Patients across the country went to the hospital as their symptoms worsen respiratory patients will be transferred to the hospital the most.

Second, the release of 11 Centers for Disease Control was one yen. Patients were initially encountered in the region do not belong at all subsequent patients has been confirmed that. No matter what the disease is contagious, which are extremely low, is evidence. Pathogen in patients with the presence of 20 species tested and only one person was only from the common cold viruses have been detected.

Nevertheless, several media "can be spread among family members", "the unidentified current 4 children hospitalized with acute lung disease is being treated as", "living in the metropolitan area of unknown etiology in 50 men died of acute lung "The expression has been reported to continue. Patients were more casualties still occur jungyiraneun story.

In fact, this misleading information, but dangerous as it is only to paved.

First, the original is a large hospital of pneumonia in ICU who was one of the leading causes of death. Inflammation of the lungs of patients with poor immunity occurs because a very good place. If the total deaths in 2009, 6300 people die of pneumonia.

Second, a very common etiology of pneumonia caused by domestic deda pneumonia of unknown cause, 30% move on hold. The cause of pneumonia, the predominant bacteria and viruses, but fungi, parasites, or chemical burns or physical injury are also causes. Mucus comes out and tested and good common pathogens, but also it would be otherwise. Collect all the thousands of unresolved cases of pneumonia, will be the only thing. It is going to do what you will find the report.

셋째, 감염성 질병이 가족간에는 더 쉽게 전염될 수 있음은 물론이다. Third, infectious diseases may spread more easily between the two families are well. So what you mean? "It is still dangerous," unless the intention of the deterrence argument unfold is difficult to think otherwise.

To hype the risk of disease, we will be deep-rooted attitude of the media reports. Mad cow disease in beef, representative example of coverage. 'Holes in the brain of college' did not occur yet without one. Pneumonia associated with the behavior of some media outlets, too. The risk of selling to readers or viewers' attention is drawn to defend the business could not care?

A representative of the medical profession called "oil crisis chimaeseong anxiety" is renamed. The media recently reported several times to exaggerate has made people nervous was severely criticized by the experts. If not for the fact that dementia is not gonna forget this century.

The dominant view of medicine and public health authorities do not understand the scientific explanation of the racing press to repeat anything, "chimaeseong unstable oil crisis" that invites criticism and semyida.

Very interesting. I am not aware of this phenomenon occurring in other countries (undiagnosed H1N1 excluded). This sounds like a lot, but if it has been going on for years, it might not be. Obviously, those cases cannot be (swine) H1N1, because there was no H1N1 before 2009.

Note that the other patients are not mentioned in this article at all, suggesting they really might not have had the same illness.

Perhaps this was just coincidence, as the ProMED moderator suggested...

472 die of ‘pneumonia from unknown causes` from 2003-07

            MAY 17, 2011 05:35
A study has found that 472 people in Korea died of lung interstitium due to unknown causes from 2003 to 2007.

The Korea Academy of Tuberculosis & Respiratory Diseases surveyed 2,186 patients diagnosed with interstitium due to unknown causes at hospitals nationwide from January 2003 to December 2007. The results of the study were published in the academy’s journal in 2009.

When classifying patients with interstitium, or those who suffer from inflammation in interstitial tissue, patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) numbered the most with 1,685 (77.1 percent).

Patients with acute interstitial pneumonitis (AIP), which the lung undergoes fast-paced fibrosis, numbered 24 (1.1 percent). AIP was also recently detected in a patient at a university hospital in Korea.

Notably, the mortality of patients with AIP was as high as 41.7 percent. Ten of the 24 patients died during the time of the survey.

In contrast, nine (37.5 percent) survived over the period of the study but researchers failed to trace the other five. The research team estimated that the three-year survival ratio of AIP patients was 57 percent.

Among the 1,685 patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, 415 (24.6 percent) died, and 682 (40.5 percent) survived. Researchers failed to trace the other 588 (34.9 percent), suggesting that this disease had the second-highest mortality rate.

Pneumonia due to unknown causes occurred among a wide range of age groups ranging from 11 to 94. The average age of the patients was 65. The number of male patients was almost twice that of women. All patients showed symptoms of difficulty breathing (67 percent), coughing (61 percent) and phlegm (32 percent).

Jeong Seong-hwan, professor of respiratory medicine at Gachon University of Medicine & Science in Incheon who participated in the survey, said, “The patient at a university hospital is believed to have suffered AIP. Additional research including on causes and therapies should be conducted after the disease is accurately defined.”

If the red text is true, and not a translation error or a report of a false rumor, it would be a very bad sign, as it seems to indicate that the son of one of the fatal pneumonia cases is in the ICU with undiagnosed pneumonia as well. (But the timing might be bad - the mother was apparently hospitalized on April 11, and as of May 11, all contacts were reported as well.)

There is a chart at the link indicating the home provinces and onset dates of the various cases. Most of them have onset in early April (the earliest listed is April 1, and the two most recent are April 26 and May 6), and does indicate which one tested postive for adenovirus, and one that tested positive for coronavirus as well.

Unexplained pneumonia, can not turn away 'at risk'

Hardens the lungs, but the cause is unknown, the mysterious pneumonia that has been identified one after another.

For patients with acute pulmonary fibrosis quickly that leads to death within a month all Thompson recently been confirmed in large hospitals in Seoul.

The patient also died suddenly this problem, but without knowing the cause of long-term treatment in patients suffering pulmonary fibrosis also not quite so urgent for them to prepare countermeasures are pointing.

2009 Study Highlighted to Ease Fears over Unidentified Pneumonia Scare

Fears are now growing, after seven pregnant women were hospitalized for an unidentified pneumonia, with one of them dying last week, but a report from 2009 shows that an average of 94 people die from this type of pneumonia each year.
The Korean Academy of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases studied more than 2-thousand patients with idiopathic interstitial pneumonia, or IIP, from 2003 to 2007, and a total of 472 did not survive.
Those with acute IIP, the same case of the recent outbreak, had a higher fatality rate with two out of every five dying, with the cause of death still unkown.
Common symptoms include coughing, difficulty in breathing, and excessive phlegm.

My understanding of IIP is that there is usually an underlying chronic lung problem. I still think that in this particular situation, with the young women of child bearing age, this could be flu virus damage to lungs.

You might be right. Notably, while several different pathogens have been detected from various cases, none of them are influenza viruses. And if the onsets are in early April (or even earlier), the causative agents could be long gone by the time they test for it in mid-May, perhaps 5-6 weeks after onset.

Those sound a lot like flu symptoms to me. I wonder what percentage of undiagnosed cases of atypical pneumonia from prior years are pregnant or post-partum women?

That's what first caught my attention when this was reported.

Another pregnant woman has died of acute pneumonia caused by an unidentified virus, the health authorities confirmed Thursday.

She was the second death among the seven pregnant women who had been hospitalized at a Seoul hospital in April for infection with the unknown virus.

The 36-year-old woman first visited the hospital on April 21 with early flu symptoms and breathing difficulty and was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis.

She died less than a month after hospitalization, like the nine-month pregnant woman who died on May 10.
