It?s summer. You live in the Capital Region. You likely know all about the threat of Lyme disease and, this season, perhaps also the three cases of rare Powassan virus that have popped up in Saratoga County.
How about anaplasmosis? Or babesiosis?
Cases of the lesser-known illnesses spread by black-legged ticks have been on the rise in a pattern that mimics the spread of Lyme disease years ago, said Bryon Backenson, director of the state Health Department?s Vector Surveillance Unit. The illness has creeped up the Hudson River, along with the black-legged ticks that carry it, from Long Island and the Hudson Valley.
In an 11-county area including the Capital Region, there have been more than 2,000 cases of anaplasmosis since 2010...
