    Saratoga County resident with Powassan virus dies
    The tick-borne disease is rare but deadly

    A Saratoga County resident who was recently diagnosed with Powassan virus ? a rare but often fatal tick-borne disease ? has died, the state Department of Health said Wednesday.

    State health officials would not say whether the person died of Powassan virus or had some other underlying illness or complication. Bryon Backenson, director of the State Health Department's Vector Surveillance Unit, cited patient confidentiality reasons.

    The patient was likely exposed to Powassan virus in May and died in June, Backenson said. The state will report the case to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention later this week...

    SARATOGA COUNTY ? The state Department of Health has confirmed a second ? and possibly a third ? case of the tick-borne Powassan virus in Saratoga County.

    The cases are the first appearances of the virus in New York state this year and affected residents from three different towns, officials said. The first case, reported last week, took the life of a 74-year-old Gansevoort man.

    Health Department spokesman Gary Holmes said testing of ticks is being increased in the county while officials study the cases, which don't appear linked...

      SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. >> Ticks testing positive for the potentially deadly Powassan virus have been found at five locations in Saratoga County, including two sites within Saratoga Spa State Park.

      The family of late Gansevoort resident, Charles Smith, says he died from the disease, and the state Health Department has confirmed two other cases involving Saratoga County residents this summer.

      In addition to Spa State Park, ticks carrying Powassan were found recently at Saratoga National Historical Park, the 100 Acre Woods Trail in Malta, and a private residence whose location the Health Department refused to identify...
