    Cryptosporidiosis outbreak warning declared in central Ohio
    Crypto is a germ that causes diarrhea and can be spread by contaminated water

    COLUMBUS (WCMH) ? Columbus Public Health along with other central Ohio agencies have declared a community outbreak of Cryptosporidiosis after more than 100 cases have been reported in the area.

    There has been a recent rise over the normal threshold of cases across several jurisdictions in central Ohio, including Columbus, Franklin County and Delaware County, according to Columbus Public Health.

    The three jurisdictions have reported more than 107 cases so far this year, which is more than the last three years combined. This outbreak is not tied to any one location. A spokesperson with Columbus Public Health says there have been 62 cases in Columbus, 34 in Franklin County and 11 in Delaware County.

    A large portion of the cases include people with multiple exposures at various recreational water facilities throughout the three jurisdictions...

    UPDATE: Columbus Public Health says as of Thursday, September 8 there have been 600 cases of Crypto across central Ohio.

    Columbus Public Health officials said they expect the crypto outbreak to get worse, before it gets better.

    The numbers are soaring as people are heading into the unofficial end of pool season.

    Crypto is a germ that causes diarrhea. It is found in the fecal matter of a person who has been infected.

    Public health officials are reaching out and working with pool operators, schools and day care facilities by providing them with information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on preventing the spread of the bacteria...

      After grueling months of skyrocketing numbers, a highly contagious diarrheal disease outbreak in central Ohio could soon taper off, health officials say.

      The number of diagnosed cryptosporidiosis cases in Franklin and Delaware counties reached 792 as of Thursday, based on recent figures from public health officials. That number, which increased by about one-third over the past two weeks, has continued to climb since the outbreak was first detected in late July.

      But the number of daily reported cases is on the decline, which is a great sign, according to Columbus Public Health spokesman Jose Rodriguez...
