Four people in Florida have died after they contracted flesh-eating bacteria this year, according to the state’s health department.

PANAMA CITY — Two people have now died this year in Bay County from a "flesh-eating" bacteria.

According to past reports, a 78-year-old man visiting St. George Island in Franklin County died at a Bay County hospital on Aug. 4 after contracting vibrio vulnificus.

The Aug. 4 incident marks the second death in Bay County this year from vibrio vulnificus. It also was the Florida's fifth death related to the bacteria this year.

So far in 2025, 16 people have contracted vibrio vulnificus across the state. In just Northwest Florida, there was one case in Okaloosa County, one case in Walton County, and two cases in Escambia County.

On Thursday, the Florida Department of Health at Bay County sent out a health advisory of possible fecal bacterial contamination in the Port St. Joe shoreline area due to a recent sewage spill.

There is a no-swim advisory to residents and visitors between the eastern shipbuilding location and Butler Bay Road, and 432 Howard Road in Port St. Joe.

The advisory said it shows contamination of enterococci bacteria, not related to Vibrio Vulnificus.

Vibrio vulnificus is a bacterium that normally lives in warm seawater and is part of a group of vibrios that are called “halophilic” because they require salt.

Vibrio vulnificus infections are rare.

Vibrio vulnificus is a naturally occurring bacteria in warm, brackish seawater.

Water and wounds do not mix. Do not enter the water if you have fresh cuts or scrapes.

IMPORTANT: Individuals who are immunocompromised, e.g chronic liver disease, kidney disease, or weakened immune system, should wear proper foot protection to prevent cuts and injury caused by rocks and shells on the beach.

Number of cases of flesh-eating bacterial infections in Central Florida jumps to 28

ORLANDO, Fla. — According to Florida Department of Health (FDOH) data as of September 18, three new cases of Vibrio vulnificus, a “flesh-eating” bacterium, have been reported in Citrus, Collier, and Lee counties in Florida.

As of 2025, Florida has reported 28 cases of Vibrio vulnificus. The bacterium, which thrives in warm, brackish water, has also been linked to five deaths in the state this year.
