British Airways jet put under quarantine

Sickness among passengers on board a British Airways jet prompted airport officials to put it in quarantine after it landed in Oslo Tuesday afternoon.
The British Airways flight, #767, came from London Heathrow with around 100 passengers.

Hans Holmgrunn of the Gardermoen police station told local newspaper Eidsvoll Ullensaker Blad that around 20 of the passengers were ill with nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.

Jo Kobro of Oslo Lufthavn Gardermoen said that a public health official was heading for the airport to go on board the fight and evaluate the situation.

In the meantime, all passengers were held on board.

Holmgrunn indicated that many of the passengers had come from Burma and had landed in both Thailand and England on their way to Oslo.

Please Note: We do not have any information as to what is causing the sickness. It could be nothing more than Norovirus.

urdar on FW (who is Norwegian) says (hat-tip, urdar!):
28 is reported sick with diareha.. It is a plane with transit from Burma, via London.
            And...
on telly they now state it landed today, it was Burmese refuges who was ill, from a food poisoning.

The plain has been in Thailand and UK after Burma.

Aparently the numbers reported was the reason for this response. It Is now named "a storm in a glass of water"..

I think it is a wakeup call...

Plane with 100 passengers isolated at Gardermoen
              Tuesday 22.05.2007, 17:45
              updated 19:33

Burmese family of 4 ate rice at home before they travelled.

[The authorities say that] 4 people from the same family have food-poisoning. They ate rice at home before they travelled, says information chief Jo Kobro at Gardermoen to Dagbladet.no.

              (...)

A plane from British Airways with ca. 100 passengers on board was isolated at Gardermoen because of illness on the plane around 4 o'clock today. The first announcements said that 20-something people were sick on board, but now they're saying that the number is much less.

              (...)

Terje Starber (65) was on board the plane.

"We flew in from London. After a little while, three or four people began to throw up. When we landed (...?) we didn't get to leave [the plane]. The infection services(?) [smittevernere] came on the plane to investigate the people," he says to Dagbladet.no.

              (...)

According to a family that waited for passengers in the arrivals hall, they were given little information about the sickness outbreak. They have waited three hours without knowing what happened.

"Around 20 persons from either Thailand or Burma were placed on a separate bus to be checked. I talked with one of them. He said they came from a "camp" and that they were moving to Norway," he said.

              (...)

A spokesmann for British Airways in London explains(?) to Dagbladet.no that there is illness aboard.

"We have received a message that there are four sick people aboard and cannot comment [at this point until there is further information?]," he says.

Re: Norway: British Airways jet put under quarantine

Here's a short minisummary of events based on what I have extracted from different eyewitness accounts reported in norwegian newspapers:

Plane lands - health personell in white coats and face masks "stormes" the plane as soon as airplane is parked at gate. Ambulances, police cars and firetrucks surrounds the plane - plane is towed away to location far away from any of the gates at the airport. Two yellow buses with ventilation openings taped shut are lined up. Passengers can see workers in full protective clothing running around the plane moving luggage etc. Some of the passengers report they feared that the sick passengers had bird flu, but situation inside the plane remains calm. Passengers are informed by a doctor that the illness among some of the passengers was probably from food poisoning, but the protective gear worn by health personell and the buses with taped shut ventilation make them wonder what is going on. After three hours all the passengers are let off the plane. They are asked for ID and told to contact their doctor if they become sick within 24 hours.

From what I can see no information is available as to what, if any, tests were carried out on the sick burmese passengers - and little information seems to be available as to what exactly is happening with the sick passengers other than that they are being cared for by norwegian health authorities.

According to information director Jo Kobro at Oslo airport, the municipality doctor has determined that four of the passengers are sick from food poisoning. The four are all from Burma and reportedly from the same family.

This article has pictures from inside the plane taken by passengers:

Re: Norway: British Airways jet put under quarantine

And shoe covers? Did these people vomit in the bags, on the floor, on the counter top, on the seat, on another passenger?

Where did the garbage bags with the vomit bags go?

How were the passengers seated near the sick people treated in the air and on the ground? I thought I saw a detailed research article about the proximity of seating location to Toronto SARS victims.

Three hours in the plane? Could they not de-plane the farther away passengers to an outdoor tent or something outside the plane? Isn't there more exposure by remaining in the same environment?

Lots, and lots of questions arise from these situations.

                        J.
