The Grand Est Regional Health Agency has received several reports of invasive meningococcal infections (IMD) in young adults in Strasbourg and its agglomeration. The results of the epidemiological investigations indicate that 4 cases of IIM attended nocturnal festive places (discotheques, bars, etc.) in the inner city of Strasbourg, including the LIVE CLUB establishment.

At this stage, the ARS invites people who have regularly visited the festive places in this district for November 18 and in particular LIVE CLUB in Strasbourg, to monitor the symptoms suggestive of illness and, if in doubt, to call 15 urgently.

Reminder of suggestive signs
• severe headaches (headaches), sensitivity to light (photophobia);
• neck stiffness, body aches and fatigue;
• fever ;
• red or purplish spots under the skin (purpura) on the body;
• very severe pain in the stomach and nausea and/or vomiting.

Epidemiological investigations have made it possible to identify and treat as a preventive measure people with been in contact at risk. Invasive meningococcal infections

There are several types of meningococci. The most common in France are group meningococci B, C, W and Y.

Meningococci are bacteria normally found in the throat and nose of many people. These bacteria can be transmitted through the air or through saliva.

Two populations at increased risk of IIM B have thus been identified in the cases observed by the Agency:

1. young people aged 16-24 in the Chambéry sector (until January 31, 2023) and in the eastern Lyon area
2. children 0-2 years old ; the new variant can also be transmitted to this age group

The Agency recommends that the people concerned in the region get vaccinated as soon as possible in order to limit the risk of transmission and the appearance of serious forms of meningococcal B.
