The Department of Public Health Mid-West has launched an investigation after a young woman in Limerick died of meningococcal disease, and warned the public to be vigilant for symptoms of the disease.

The victim, who was not identified but who it is understood was aged under 30, died recently, after the department was made aware of the case in late September.

A department spokesman said that it was “investigating a single case of confirmed meningococcal disease in Limerick, and we offer our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased”...

HSE investigating meningitis cases after three deaths confirmed

The HSE said three people have died from meningococcal meningitis/septicaemia since late September and have asked people to be alert to symptoms as this usually causes less than 10 deaths annually.

Different regions have reported four cases, and no links have been found between them with three among young adults and one in a child younger than ten.

HSE national immunisation office director Dr Lucy Jessop said early treatment can be effective.

“We have seen pre-Covid five to ten deaths a year but the issue with meningococcal disease it can be very serious and you must recognise it early and get early medical treatment,” she said.

HSE Public Health Mid-West are investigating one case in Limerick which led to the death of a young adult.

Antibiotics are being offered to close or household contacts and vaccines if appropriate.

... These cases are bacterial meningitis which is less common but usually more serious and requires urgent treatment with antibiotics.

“Three of them have been confirmed as this serogroup B,” Dr Jessop said.

The HSE have issued a warning in Louth for awareness of the symptoms of meningococcal meningitis/septicaemia, after a number of cases were identified around the country.

The health executive issued a statement confirming that it is “investigating four cases of meningococcal meningitis/septicaemia reported in the last week of September; three cases have been confirmed, and one is possible. Three of the cases are reported to be caused by serogroup B. Sadly, two of the people affected have died.”...

HSE investigating case of meningococcal disease in Mayo

The Department of Public Health West is investigating a single case of confirmed meningococcal disease in County Mayo.

Public Health West was notified of the case in early December, and concerns a teenager.

Close contacts identified by Public Health West have been contacted and offered preventive treatment....

A sixteen-year-old girl from Shannon town, Clare, named locally as Aoife Johnston, passed away after contracting bacterial meningitis.

Aoife died on Monday in University Hospital Limerick after becoming very unwell on Saturday, however the Leaving Cert student was still attending school at St Caimin’s Community School as recently as Friday, according to the Claire Echo...

Bacterial meningitis/septicaemia in Ireland

The HSE is advising the public to remain vigilant regarding meningitis and reminded parents to ensure their children and teenagers are fully vaccinated as per the National Immunisation Programme.

Current situation
As of 21/12/2022 27 meningococcal cases were notified to HPSC in Ireland, compared with 71 cases in the same period in 2019 (before the pandemic and social mixing restrictions). Six cases have been reported in December.

This is not an outbreak. Meningococcal disease is known to have increased incidence in winter and early spring. Among the 27 cases, different age groups were affected from different parts of the country. Where known, the strain type is serogroup B. There are no links found between the cases.

Between 1st January 2022 and 21st December 2022 a total of 27 meningococcal cases have been notified. Sadly, four of the cases have died during the year...
