    Man dies of meningococcal disease

    March 17, 2010

A man from the New South Wales Hunter Valley has died from meningococcal disease.

It is the first death in three years and the third confirmed case in the Hunter-New England region this year.

The man's family and friends have been given antibiotics and health officials are confident the case is not linked to others.

Public health physician Dr David Durrheim says it is a tragic reminder the disease is fatal for adults as well as young children.

"We see most of our invasive meningococcal cases are in younger children and teens but as this case proves sadly it can occur in all ages," Dr Durrheim said.

"The highest risk period is as we head into winter and early spring, so now is a good time for people to be on the alert."
