    No vaccine for new strain of bacteria causing meningitis outbreak in Upper West – GHS
    It has emerged that there is no vaccine for the strain of bacteria that has caused an outbreak of meningitis in the Upper West Region.

    Of the 409 persons who have since February this year contracted the life-threatening disease in the five northern regions, 258 are from the Upper West Region. As at April 15, 40 deaths representing a 15 per cent fatality rate, has been recorded.

    Meningitis is an acute febrile illness which affects the brain and spinal cord. It is characterised by fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, neck stiffness, altered consciousness, convulsion, seizures and coma.

    The disease is endemic in the northern part of Ghana which falls within the meningitis belt of Africa

    The Ghana Health Service (GHS) says the current outbreak in the Upper West Region is caused mainly by a new strain of bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis serotype X as well as streptococcus pneumonia, which it said has an average 40 per cent fatality rate...

      The death toll from the outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) in the Upper West Region has risen to 43 with infections currently standing at 273.

      Dr Hafiz bin Salih, the Upper West Regional Minister, briefing journalists on the latest deaths Monday lamented the development is not pleasant at all.

          Upper West Region: 30 More Meningitis Cases Recorded; One More Dies

          Additional 30 persons have contracted meningitis in the Upper West Region within the past two weeks, bringing the total number of cases in that region to 303.

          One more person has also died of the disease, increasing the number of fatalities to 44.

          This was contained in a press release issued today, Tuesday and signed by the Upper West Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih.

          According to the release, the Nandom and Jirapa municipalities, as well as the Nadowli-Kaleo districts continue to record a majority of the cases.

          The Ghana Health Service deployed a team of experts to help bring the disease under control.

          The Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye who visited the region last week to assess the situation reported to Parliament that the pandemic was under control...

            Two More Die From Meningitis

            Two more people have succumbed to meningitis in the Upper West and Upper East regions.

            This is according to the Minister of Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman Manu.

            With the update, the total number of deaths from the disease in Ghana now stands at 45, with over 315 people infected in both regions.
