    HSE warns of rise in meningococcal disease as three patients die from infection

    The HSE has revealed that there has been a "noted increase" in meningococcal disease in the country in the last two weeks.

    They said that 11 cases have been notified to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) since the last week of December and three patients have died from the infection.

    It compares to five cases for the same time period, December 24 to January 7, last year.

    Altogether in 2018, a total of 89 meningococcal cases were notified compared to 76 in 2017.

    Provisional data from the recent strain of the disease shows that all age groups have been affected, ranging from infants to elderly. Of the three patients who died, two different strain types were identified...

    The HSE is investigating another possible case of meningitis following recent deaths after a spike in people diagnosed with the potentially lethal infection.

    Three people have died from various strains of meningitis in recent weeks.

    It was revealed last week that eleven cases were identified between Christmas Eve and January 6.

    The HSE confirmed it is now investigating a possible twelfth case...

      HSE West confirms death from suspected meningitis in western region

      THE HSE West has issued a statement confirming it is aware of a death at the weekend from suspected meningococcal meningitis in the western region.

      The HSE public health department is following up to ensure that all appropriate public health measures are taken.

      The HSE advises that if anyone has any concerns, they should contact their GP in the first instance but ensure that prompt medical expertise is sought.

      Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, which is the name given to the layer of tissue covering the brain and spinal cord...

        Three deaths spark health alert as meningitis spikes

        Three people have died from a killer form of meningitis in the last two weeks.

        A spike in cases of the lethal bug has seen 11 people fall ill over Christmas and the New Year in Dublin and other regions.

        Health officials warned of a steep rise in meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia over the festive season.

        Parents have been warned to be alert for symptoms and to seek urgent medical help in the event of a young child or adolescent falling ill.
