GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) (09/19/18) - Three different schools in Mid-Michigan have had confirmed cases of viral meningitis recently.

The districts say all classrooms and buses have undergone a deep cleaning and school was back in session Wednesday.

Meningitis is an infection of the lining around the brain and spinal cord. The viral form is considered much less serious than the bacterial form of the infection.

It can lead to symptoms that include such things as headaches, neck stiffness and fever, said Dr. Nazem Abdel Fattah of McLaren.

Edgerton Elementary School in Clio and McComb Elementary School in Caro both became aware of the diagnoses affecting their buildings on Tuesday.

Another case reported, what you need to know about viral meningitis
Craig McMorris Sep 19, 2018 Updated 21 hrs ago 0

Viral meningitis is making its way across Mid-Michigan schools.

Five districts have reported cases of the virus within the last few weeks.

Viral meningitis is an inflammation of the covering of the brain. It's kind of like when you have a cold, and you have a bad sore throat, same kind of thing. So, kind of like a virus in your throat, it's like a virus in your brain,? Dr. Matthew Deibel said.

Deibel has seen at least two cases of the virus at Covenant Medical Center this week. The Saginaw County Health Department said countywide, it is seeing more cases of viral meningitis this year.

Local schools are feeling it, too.

Thursday parents at Springview Elementary School in Flushing received a letter saying a first grade student was diagnosed with it.

Parents and guardians of students at Edgerton Elementary School in Clio also received a letter this week regarding an individual being diagnosed with viral meningitis.

The individual will not be back in the building until a doctor has provided clearance to return.

Similar letters have been sent out recently at Havens Elementary School in the Swan Valley District, McComb Elementary in Caro and Rittmueller Middle School in Frankenmuth...
