    Outbreak of Meningitis worry residents of Katsina State

    It is a worry state of mind for the residents of Katsina State as they groan under intense heat as daily temperature currently averages as high as 39 degree Celsius, while the state government warns of an outbreak of Cerebrum Spinal Meningitis in the state.

    Although the number of casualties of the disease was unavailable as of press time, the Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Health, Dr. Kabir Mustapha, on Friday, confirmed the outbreak of CSM in the state.

    Mustapha told journalists that the disease had been confirmed in Batsari Local Government Area...

      Meningitis claims 16 lives in Niger

      Sixteen people have lost their lives to cerebrospinal meningitis in Magama local government area of Niger state, state officials confirmed yesterday.

      The breakdown of mortalities shows that nine female and seven male died in the latest outbreak of the disease in Madakayi and Aungwan Tunga villages of the local government.

      The commissioner of health Dr. Mustapha Jibril at a press briefing on the development yesterday said the victims were between the age of one and 20.

      He said the high casualty was as a result of the people's reluctant to seek medical attention immediately the they develop the symptoms, while blaming the anomaly on witchcraft.

      The commissioner disclosed that 31 cases of meningitis was reported across four local government areas of the state on March 6, including Magama. The other affected local government areas were Kontagora, Rijau and Agwara...

        Health Commissioner confirms meningitis spread in Zamfara

        The Zamfara Government has confirmed the spread of meningitis to all the 14 local government areas of the state.

        Alhaji Suleiman Gummi, the state Commissioner for Health told newsmen on Tuesday in Gusau, that the disease first emerged in Birnin-Magaji local government area 10 days ago.

        He said that areas worst hit were Maradun and Bindin villages in Maru local government...

          Meningitis Epidemic: 21 Dead In Sokoto State

          A reliable government source confirmed this to Channels Television on Sunday.

          The deaths were said to have occurred in seven local governments of Kebbe, Bodinga, Rabah, Wamakko, Gada, Dange/Shuni and Tureta.

          The state government however said that so far, it has deployed about 15 medical teams, comprising of over 150 medical personnel to the 23 local governments of the state to prevent further spread.

            Death Toll Rises to 23 in Sokoto Meningitis Outbreak

            The death toll as a result of the meningitis epidemic in Sokoto State has now risen to 23, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

            The State Health Commissioner, Balarabe Kakale, confirmed the meningitis-related deaths on Monday in Dange town, headquarters of Dange/Shuni Local Government of the state.

              Meningitis: Death toll hits 269; 1,828 suspected cases

              An outbreak of meningitis in Nigeria has killed 269 people in recent weeks, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control said, as Africa?s most populous country and aid organisations attempt to tackle the surge in infections.

              As of Monday, 1,828 suspected cases of meningitis were reported with 269 deaths in 15 of the country?s 36 states, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said on Twitter late on Tuesday.

              The centre said on its website that 33 people died of meningitis in 2016.

                Situation Report as at 28 March 2017

                Highlights (28 March 2017):
                i. Meningitis outbreaks are currently reported in five States (Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger and
                Sokoto) in Northwest and Northcentral zones of Nigeria
                ii. The most common serotype is Neisseria meningitidis serotype C (Nm C)
                iii. As at 28th of March 2017, a total of 1966 cases with 282 deaths have been reported with 109 being
                laboratory confirmed
                iv. About 500,000 doses of the AC-PS vaccine granted by the International Coordinating Group on
                Vaccine Provision (ICG) for reactive vaccination in Zamfara has arrived Nigeria
                v. Reactive Vaccination has been scheduled for 7th ? 11th April 2017 in Zamfara State, while other

                  Death toll from Nigeria?s meningitis outbreak has hit 328, the nation's health minister said Saturday.

                  Prof. Isaac Odewole said the country was battling an entirely new strain of the bacteria called meningitis stereotype C and vaccines were not readily available for commercial sale.

                  Previous outbreak had been the stereotype A, which killed at least 33 people in 2016, the minister said in a statement.

                    Highlights
                     Reactive vaccination campaign started on the 5th of April 2017 in Zamfara State with massive turnout in all
                    the targeted communities
                     A joint team of NCDC, NPHCDA and partners is supporting the reactive vaccination campaign and outbreak
                    response in Zamfara State
                     Meningitis outbreaks are currently reported in 19 States with five States mostly affected (Zamfara, Katsina,
                    Kebbi and Sokoto in the North-West zone and Niger in the North-Central zone of Nigeria)
                     The most common serotype is Neisseria meningitidis serotype C (Nm C)
                    As at 5th April 2017, a total of 3,959 cases with 438 deaths have been reported, with 181 laboratory

                      Nigeria meningitis outbreak death toll hits 489

                      The current meningitis outbreak in Nigeria has so far killed at least 489 people, the health minister, Isaac Adewole, said Tuesday.

                      Mr. Adewole said 4,637 cases of cerebrospinal meningitis were recorded across the country by Monday.

                      The ministry had announced 428 deaths recorded on Friday.

                      The minister gave the latest figure during an emergency meeting of northern state governors and traditional rulers on Tuesday in Kaduna...

                        CEREBROSPINAL MENINGITIS OUTBREAK IN NIGERIA

                        (As at 13thApril, 2017)

                        Highlights
                         An outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM), which started in December 2016, is ongoing in Nigeria.
                         As at April 13, 2017, a total of 5,695 suspected cases have been reported; 221 (4%) are laboratory confirmed;
                        611 deaths (10.9%) have been recorded.
                         The outbreak currently affects 25 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across six states? Zamfara, Sokoto,
                        Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, and Yobe. Note that the affected LGAs in Yobe State have reported NmA. No NmC (as
                        seen in the other states above) has been reported in Yobe.
                         The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has deployed Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) to provide onsite
                        outbreak investigation and control support to affected states.
                         Mass vaccination campaigns, led by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency targeting the
                        most at-risk populations have successfully been conducted in Zamfara and Katsina States
                         Distribution of medicines and other essential commodities to affected states is ongoing.
                         High-level engagement of political and traditional leaders was successfully conducted during the week;
                        advocacy, communication and social mobilization activities to increase population awareness also ongoing in
                        affected states.
                         The Government of Nigeria continues to actively work with Global Health partners to facilitate increased
                        vaccines, laboratory and other supplies procurement to assist with the ongoing response.

                        Epi summary
                         The first outbreak case was reported in Zamfara State during Epidemiology Week 50 (December 12? 18, 2016)
                         A total of 5,595 suspected cases with 611 deaths (CFR=10.9%) have been reported
                         Of the reported cases, 412 (7.4%) were laboratory tested; of which 221 (54%) were confirmed positive for
                        bacterial meningitis.
                         Neisseria meningitides serotype C. was the commonest cause of meningitis amongst those who tested positive;
                        151 out of the 221 confirmed cases (71%) were due to Neisseria meningitides serotype C.
                         Majority of the suspected cases (51%) were in the 5-14 year age group.
                         In the six affected states? Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara? a total of 15 LGAs are
                        currently within the alert threshold and are therefore currently under intense monitoring, while 23 LGAs have
                        reached the epidemic threshold, with full outbreak investigation and control measures being implemented.

                          (As at 17thApril, 2017)

                          Highlights
                           The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) continues to coordinate a national emergency response to the ongoing cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) outbreak, which started in December 2016.
                          As at April 17, 2017, 8,057 suspected cases have been reported; 230 (3%) are laboratory confirmed. A total of 745 deaths (9.2%) have been recorded.
                           During the last four weeks, a total of 38 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across six states? Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, and Yobe?reached alert/epidemic threshold status. LGAs reaching the alert threshold trigger intensified epidemic preparedness; a full outbreak response is activated in LGAs reaching the epidemic threshold.
                           Although suspected case numbers have increased in Yobe State, no Neisseria meningitis C cases (observed in other states) has been reported in the state.
                           NCDC Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) deployed to affected states continue to provide on-site technical assistance.
                           Mass vaccination campaigns are planned in Sokoto during April 24 ? 28, 2017. National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) is coordinating the vaccination activities with NCDC and other partners.
                           Distribution of medicines and laboratory commodities to affected states is ongoing.
                           NCDC continues to analyse the outbreak situation and provide preparedness and response guidance to states and other jurisdictions.

                          Epi summary
                           The first outbreak case was reported in Zamfara State during Epidemiology Week 50 (December 12 ? 18, 2016).
                           A total of 8,057 suspected cases with 745 deaths (CFR=9.2%) have been reported.
                           Of the reported cases, 450 (6%) were laboratory tested; of these, 230 (51%) were confirmed positive for bacterial meningitis.
                           Neisseria meningitides serotype C. was the commonest cause of meningitis among all samples testing positive; 157 out of the 230 confirmed cases (68%) were due to Neisseria meningitides serotype C.
                           Majority of the suspected cases (51%) were in the 5-14 year age group.
                           In the six affected states? Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara? a total of 15 LGAs are currently within the alert threshold and are therefore currently under intense
                          preparedness monitoring, while 23 LGAs have reached the epidemic threshold, with full outbreak investigation and control measures being implemented.

                            Adewole disclosed this while speaking to journalists at the end of Wednesday?s federal executive council meeting.

                               As at 22nd April, 2017, of the 9,646 suspected cases reported, 277 (2.9%) were laboratory confirmed, and 839 deaths (8.7%) recorded
                               In the last four weeks (Epi-Week 12-16), 43 Local Government Areas (LGAs) have reached alert/epidemic threshold in seven States ? Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, Yobe and Plateau
                               Additional technical teams are still in affected States supporting coordination and other response activities
                               Planned reactive vaccination campaign in Sokoto State by National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) will now commence on 27th April, 2017
                               Additional commodities for laboratory diagnosis and treatment have been provided for the most affected States
                               The Government of Nigeria has concluded plans to deploy 62 medical teams ? 28 and 34 to Zamfara and Sokoto States, respectively. Each team shall comprise of a Medical Doctor, a Nurse, Laboratory Scientist and supported by Data Officers per LGA
