Meningitis hits Gulu

Meningitis has hit displaced people?s (IDPs) camps in Gulu district, medics have said.
Thirteen out of the 29 suspected cases of meningitis that have been reported from various camps have been confirmed by medical officials.
District director of health services Dr. Paul Onek told an epidemic preparedness meeting on Friday that eight suspected cases were reported in Gulu municipality, five of which were confirmed to be meningitis.
He said eight other suspected cases were reported in Unyama camp and five had been confirmed.
There were three suspected cases from Bobi camp, two from Pabbo, two from Koch-Goma, one from Coo-Pee and two from Rackoko IDP camp in Pader district.
In Unyama, cases were mainly from Zone B.
?Gulu has been on high alert since the Ministry of Health declared an outbreak of meningitis in Karamoja.
efforts were made to improve surveillance, education, laboratory facilities and the capacity of health workers to manage cases.
Onek said surveillance teams should draw budgets to facilitate their activities.
