NCDC records over 4,000 meningitis cases across Nigeria in three months

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) recorded more than 4,000 meningitis cases nationwide between early February and early May 2025.

According to a statement signed by the Field Communication Officer (Press) of Médecins Sans Frontières | Doctors Without Borders (MSF), Abdulkareem Yakubu, and made available to the press in Kano on Wednesday, 70 per cent of those cases were treated in MSF-supported facilities in Kebbi and Sokoto states.

The statement further noted that bacterial meningitis—commonly found in Nigeria—is the most serious type of meningitis and can cause inflammation of the tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord...

Meningitis spreads to Kebbi, Sokoto, Yobe, claims 14 lives from 315 suspected cases

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported the spread of the Cerebrospinal Meningitis outbreak to Kebbi, Sokoto, and Yobe States, with a total of 315 suspected cases as of March 23, 2025.

Of these, 38 cases tested positive for cerebrospinal meningitis, with 23 confirmed as Neisseria meningitis serogroup C, 14 as Neisseria meningitis to serogroup W, and one as Streptococcus pneumoniae.

According to the Director General (DG), Jide Idris in a situation report on the agency’s website, the outbreak has resulted in 14 deaths, bringing the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) to 4.4% in the reporting week 12.

The report stated that a total of 60 samples were collected from nine States, including Adamawa, Gombe, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa, Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory, and Bauchi while four Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Kebbi and Sokoto States have exceeded the epidemic threshold.

There was a 65% decrease in reported cases in epidemiological week 12 compared to week 11, which had reported 418 cases, it revealed.

The report also indicated that cumulatively, as of March 23, 2025 from 2023, a total of 4,804 suspected cases and 413 deaths have been reported since the start of the 2023 season with a CFT of 0.5% difference...

Nigeria records 74 deaths from 807 meningitis cases in 22 states – NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says that 74 deaths have been recorded in 807 suspected cases of cerebrospinal meningitis in 22 states as of March 26, 2025

The NCDC stated that the Case Fatality Rate is at 9.2 per cent as of March 26, 2025.

The centre said in a statement titled: “CSM outbreak: NCDC rapid response teams in Kebbi, Sokoto, and Katsina states,” signed by its Head of Corporate Communication, Sani Datti, on Thursday.

It explained that its Rapid Response Teams are already in Kebbi, Sokoto, and Katsina states in response to the ongoing outbreak of CSM.\

It noted that the deployment follows a significant increase in suspected cases reported from these states.

“As of 26th March 2025, a total of 807 suspected cases and 74 deaths have been reported across 22 states, with a CFR of 9.2 per cent.

“Affected states include Kebbi, Katsina, Jigawa, Yobe, Gombe, Adamawa, Borno, Ebonyi, Oyo, Bauchi, Ondo, Kaduna, Osun, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Benue, Ekiti, Niger, Plateau, FCT, and Sokoto.

“Kebbi, Katsina, and Sokoto States have recorded the highest number of suspected cases, deaths, and CFRs, with relatively low sample collection rates, necessitating urgent intervention,” it stated...

Meningitis Outbreak Kills Six Varsity Students

No fewer than six students of Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero (KSUSTA), have died from the outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis.

Meningitis outbreak: 56 dead, over 600 cases recorded in Kebbi

At least 56 people have been confirmed dead, and there are 653 reported cases of cerebrospinal meningitis affecting five Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Kebbi State. The most seriously affected areas are Jega, Aliero, and Gwandu, but the situation is now under control.

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Nigerian authorities confirmed Tuesday that a meningitis outbreak in the northwest was behind the death of at least 26 people over several weeks.

The spread of the disease in the state of Kebbi began late January with over 200 suspected cases recorded, the state commissioner for health, Musa Ismail, told reporters in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital.

Ismail also said medical supplies have already been dispatched to the affected areas, and isolation centers set up to prevent the further spread of the disease.

Sokoto, another state in the northwest and about 150 kilometers (90 miles) away from Kebbi, has urged residents to remain vigilant after several cases were suspected.

Sokoto state commissioner of health, Faruk Abubakar, said residents should take precautionary measures and seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility if they are experiencing symptoms such as high fever, stiff neck and severe headaches...
