An 80-year-old American tourist died of malaria at the Fernández Hospital in the city of Buenos Aires and set off alarms in Argentina due to the deadly disease that is transmitted by mosquito bites.
David Gernant was a former United States judge who was traveling the world. The man, whose last stop before arriving in Buenos Aires was Ushuaia, had previously traveled through Turkey, Ethiopia and India, so they still do not know where he contracted the infection.
The case occurred on January 7, but was only announced this week. The report from the Buenos Aires Ministry of Health indicates that Gernant entered the Fernández Hospital and died within minutes.
As indicated, the patient arrived at the hospital ward with “high fever, severe anemia and hypoglycemia” for which he had to be intubated. However, half an hour later he died.
Through a Malbrán study, it was confirmed that the tourist died from malaria and the case generated concern since in 2019 the World Health Organization (WHO) certified that Argentina is a country free of the disease. This approval was given since no indigenous cases were detected since 2011 and the last outbreak was recorded in Misiones in 2007.
Given this fact, the authorities are investigating the case with the idea of obtaining information about where he may have been bitten by the Anopheles mosquito, which transmits the disease...
