First case of malaria detected in Lambayeque: authorities fear that an outbreak will begin
The patient acquired the disease while traveling in endemic areas and self-medicated before seeking professional help at a health facility.

A case of malaria, the first reported in the Lambayeque region, was recorded in a 40-year-old adult who presented initial symptoms of the disease during the month of December 2023, as indicated by the head of Epidemiology of the Regional Health Management (Geresa), Eduardo Vergara Wekselman.

According to the information revealed by the Geresa representative, the patient had been traveling through several malaria-endemic areas, where it is usually found. After contracting the disease, the first symptoms appeared during the first days of January: headache, general malaise and chills.

The patient's particular case was that he proceeded to self-medicate, a practice not recommended by health professionals, which did not produce any results. It is in this scenario that the patient went to a private laboratory, where a special evaluation was carried out that tested positive for vivax malaria.

"The quality control of the sample is being carried out, because initially the patient did it privately, later he did it at the Ferreñafe Reference Hospital and the test for vivax malaria is positive," said Dr. Vergara Wekselman...
