The Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported 67 confirmed cases of malaria and 37 of leishmaniasis.
The malaria patients reached 46 men and 21 women, who visited endemic areas such as the Guna Yala region (Armila, Tubuala and Ailigandí), Chepo in the Madugandí region and the province of Darién, the Minsa reported in a press release.
The symptoms caused by malaria are fever, chills, general feeling of being unwell, headache, nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, muscle or joint pain.
Regarding the 37 affected by leishmaniasis, the Minsa indicated that 23 are men and 14 women, most of whom are from the townships of Pedregal, Las Garzas, Betania, Ancón, December 24, Las Mañanitas, San Francisco and Veracruz.
Leishmaniasis is a disease transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito and in Panama the most common is cutaneous, which forms rashes on the skin.
To avoid mosquito bites, medical authorities recommend that the population place protective mesh on windows, mosquito nets on beds, use mosquito repellant, wear pants and long-sleeved shirts.
To control the migration of patients affected by malaria and leishmaniasis, the Minsa maintains epidemiological surveillance and coordination with other endemic regions.
