Ministry of Health: Malaria cases shoot up across Uganda

Jinja, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Ministry of Health has reported an increase in malaria cases in the country.

According to the health ministry, there is a 50 percent increase in the number of persons seeking treatment for the disease. The increased cases are being experienced in the regions of Busoga, Lango, Acholi, Tooro, and West Nile regions.

The most affected districts are in Busoga region and they include; Namutumba, Kibuuku, Butaleja, Budaka, Butebo, Bugiri, Bugweri, Buyende, Iganga, Jinja,Pallisa, Kaliro, Kamuli, Luuka, Mayuge and Namayingo. Another district with high cases is Tororo...

Malaria cases surge in Uganda

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The number of malaria cases in Uganda has risen since January, Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng said on Thursday.

Aceng said that of the 11.25 million patients who had visited outpatient departments since the start of the year, roughly 3.15 million had malaria, according to tweets by Ugandan parliament. Nearly 775,000 malaria cases were children under five years old...

Uganda on alert as malaria cases and deaths rise

A resurgence of malaria cases and deaths in Uganda is worrying the medical fraternity amid reported shortage of medicines.

According to Jimmy Opigo, the programme manager for malaria control at the Ministry of Health, preliminary findings point to a drop in usage of mosquito nets, mutation of the malaria parasite and increase in drug resistance.

“We are also studying whether Covid-19 could have had some impact,” Dr Opigo said.

Some private and public hospitals in high risk districts are reporting an increase in the number of malaria patients seeking treatment in the facilities, health workers said...

Malaria killing cancer outpatients, say UCI officials

The Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) has said they have been forced to accommodate cancer outpatients and their attendants because they were getting infected with malaria and some had succumbed to the disease.

While receiving a tent for the patients donated by the Grant Thornton Foundation on Tuesday, Mr Amos Obote, the programme manager of patient navigation at UCI, said the board was forced to buy the tents to deal with the issue.

“Previously, patients used to sleep in the corridors. We did an assessment and realised that there are social needs which have to be provided and included accommodation. When some patients come to UCI that is the only address they know in Kampala. Malaria was killing some of them and yet cancer treatment is too expensive that is why we shifted them,” he said.
