Limpopo health dept concerned over malaria infection in Waterberg
The area has recorded 43 cases of malaria in the past two weeks alone.
    Koket?o Motau | about 10 hours ago

JOHANNESBURG - The Limpopo Health Department says it?s deeply concerned about a high number of malaria infections, in the Waterberg region.

The area has recorded 43 cases of malaria in the past two weeks alone.

The department says while a team of experts is on the ground to fight the further spread of malaria, the recent flood in the area could have contributed, because Waterberg is not a malaria prevalent area.

Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba says over 70% of the patients did not travel to any place where they could have caught the parasitic infection...

The truth behind malaria in Pretoria
    Thato Mahlangu

This comes after two women recently died from malaria in the north of Pretoria.

Health organisations are working hard to investigated the reported cases of malaria in Pretoria to determine their origin.

This comes after two women recently died from malaria in the north of Pretoria.

Cheryl Pieterse and Jolynn Hocanin of Doornpoort died within days of one another and neither had travelled to a known malaria transmission area, Rekord East reported.

?A team comprising members from the Vector Control Reference Laboratory at NICD, District Health Services, Environmental Health and Communicable Disease Control programmes is conducting an investigation in the area,? said the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) in a statement.

The NICD said it was likely the two patients acquired malaria from the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito inadvertently translocated from a malaria endemic area.

The institute said there was a bigger possibility the infected mosquito was translocated via a vehicle such as a minibus or car from a suitcase or an aeroplane.

The University of Pretoria?s Institute for Sustainable Malaria Control (UP ISMC) said it was working hard to establish the truth...

Malaria count up to 2000 since April
By Mogale Mojela on May 25, 2017 in Malaria, News, OurHealth

LIMPOPO ? While the number of patients reporting to clinics and hospitals with malaria in Mopani is dropping, the provincial health department remains concerned as the battle to end the current outbreak continues.

Limpopo Department of Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba and UN Ambassador on Malaria, Yvonne Chaka Chaka.

Education and awareness campaigns are ongoing as winter sets in and temperatures drop, causing mosquitoes to die out.

The area has been hard-hit by a malaria outbreak that saw 1200 cases of malaria in April alone, with the May figure now approaching 800 cases.

Singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka, the United Nations special ambassador on malaria, recently visited the area during the Limpopo Department of Health?s malaria awareness campaign in Dzumeri village, which falls under the Greater Giyani Municipality in Mopani District...

Kruger National Park urge visitors to be vigilant of malaria
?Tourists can consult with our doctors for information and advice prior to their visit to the park or even if they see symptoms of the diseases while still on the visit?

MBOMBELA ? Management of the Kruger National Park has urged visitors to take necessary precautionary measures against malaria before visiting the park.

?To reduce the risk of getting malaria while staying in the park, visitors are advised to use repellents on their skin, wear long-sleeved clothes if they happen to go outside their residences, keep the window and doors closed at all times and check that these are not broken,? advises the KNP?s spokesperson, Mr William Mabasa.

He also urged all visitors who have contracted malaria after visiting the KNP to quickly report this to them, ?Such information can assist us in identifying all the affected areas within the park,? he said...

            Malaria outbreak in Limpopo, Mpumalanga
            Sunday 15 October 2017 08:15
            Katlego Nyoni

There have been isolated cases of malaria reported in Limpopo and Mpumalanga since September, the start of the malaria season.

In Limpopo, some of the areas where isolated cases of malaria have been detected include Musina and some parts of Elim in the far north of the province.

The Health Department has started fumigating the affected areas using the DDT chemicals.

Sipho Rabuli from Muwaweni village outside Elim says two of his family members are now on Malaria treatment...

Limpopo, Mpumalanga record high Malaria cases
              Friday 20 October 2017 15:42
              Shibu Mamokgere
Travellers to neighbouring countries who begin to experience fever and flu like symptoms are advised to do blood tests.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases says a high number of Malaria cases have been reported in Limpopo and Mpumalanga. The most affected areas include farms in the Waterberg district of Limpopo, the Kruger National Park and some private reserves next to the park.

In KwaZulu-Natal cases are limited to a small portion in the province's far north area and control efforts have been successful.

The Institute says a very busy Malaria season that peaked between April and June, has so far resulted in almost 800 cases being recorded. Limpopo and Mpumalanga which are regarded as Malaria transmission areas, have contributed a large number to that figure.

Apart from the Waterberg district, isolated cases have already been reported in Limpopo's Musina and Elim areas. The institute says prevention strategies in the form of spraying of households are in progress in the affected provinces and there are continuous efforts to ensure the availability of life saving drugs to treat malaria...

                Malaria outbreak remains concern
                News - Date: 24 November 2017
                Written by: Isabel Venter /

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) recently announced that scientists are stepping up their surveillance of South Africa?s malaria-control programme. The NICD?s announcement followed only days after the National Department of Health (DoH) issued an urgent malaria alert at the end of October.

Shortly before the kick-off of National Malaria Week (6 to 10 November), the Southern African Development Community also added their concerns about the 2017 South African malaria season (which peaked in May) being far worse than the previous year.

According to the DoH, higher-than-normal numbers of malaria cases were being reported in the malaria transmission areas (Vhembe and Mopani district) in Limpopo. This also included cases on farms along the Lephalale River, Waterberg and in Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga.

Both the NICD and DoH agreed that these elevated incidences of malaria were caused by high rainfall, humidity and ambient temperatures. In addition, 2017?s unusually mild winter further allowed mosquitos and parasites to continue breeding and in turn led to an early start to the current season, which began in August.

?While the several thousand confirmed cases in 2017 were far fewer than the 67 000 cases reported in the malaria epidemic of 2000, it is a significant increase on 2016. The rise is causing concern among officials, who are stepping up their scrutiny of SA?s malaria control programme,? said the NICD...
