Leptospirosis is a serious, sometimes fatal disease. It is a notifiable disease (NOD) in New Caledonia. Leptospira.
This disease is caused by bacteria, leptospires, which are widespread throughout the world, and of which there are several varieties. It is generally contracted during an activity related to fresh water contaminated by urine or with contaminated animals. The incubation, of variable duration, can last from two to twenty-one days.
The most common symptoms are: high fever (generally above 39°C), muscle, joint and abdominal pain and severe headache. The disease can worsen a few days after the first signs and spread to the meninges, liver, kidneys, lungs, etc.
Treatment is based on taking antibiotics.

Situation as of February 29, 2024 :
21 cases declared since January 1, 2024 spread over 10 municipalities (southern province: 4 cases, northern province: 17 cases, island province: 0).
20 people were hospitalized (95%), including 7 in the intensive care unit (35%).
Figures for the year 2023 and 2022
In 2023, 152 cases of leptospirosis were reported. Among them, 130 people (85%) were hospitalized and 4 deaths were recorded (2.6%).
In 2022, 265 cases of leptospirosis were reported. Among them, 227 people (85.6%) were hospitalized and 4 deaths were recorded (1.1%).
