In its weekly bulletin, Public Health France notes a sustained rate of leptospirosis cases in Reunion, with 12 cases recorded from May 29 to June 4, 2023. This marked incidence of leptospirosis at this time of year seems "to be linked with the late drop in temperatures and with the rains of recent times". As of June 7, 106 biologically confirmed cases (PCR or serology) have been declared to the ARS, compared to 142 for the same period of 2022. In nearly one out of two cases, the cases resided in the south of the island.
Between week 1 of the year and week 22 (from May 29 to June 4), 61 emergency visits including 41 hospitalizations for suspected leptospirosis were identified, compared to 98 visits and 67 hospitalizations for the same period in 2022.
Public Health France also notes "a slight increase in activity related to influenza (detection of type B virus)". Two passages in intensive care were noted from May 29 to June 4. SPF recommends "vigilance to be had as to the evolution over the coming weeks". However, there is no proven outbreak and overactivity at this stage.
On the dengue fever side, since the beginning of April, despite a very calm overall situation and the end of the southern summer, we note “viral circulation in the municipality of Saint-Joseph (mainly in the Jacques district for the moment)”. To date, 9 cases have been linked to this district for a total of 13 cases in the municipality. “The serotyping results carried out on the first cases were able to show that these cases were of serotype 2, whereas the latter had not been detected since the end of 2020” specifies SPF.
"Despite the arrival of the austral winter which coincides with a reduction in viral transmission given the decrease in the activity of the vector mosquito, great rigor is required and patients presenting with a feverish symptom are invited to take a biological sample of confirmation."
