    11 people have died due to leptospirosis so far this year with the youngest being 6-years-old.

    Most of the deaths were between 16 to 35 years of age.

    Permanent Secretary for Health, Doctor James Fong says they have confirmed 74 cases since January, however, there are many more who were diagnosed clinically.

    The 3 divisional hospitals have reported 28 admissions with 19 in Lautoka Hospital alone.

    He says after the recent floods, they are starting to see more people admitted for leptospirosis in hospitals in the Western Division and the intensive care unit at Lautoka Hospital.

      A six-year-old is among 14 people who have died from leptospirosis in Fiji this year.

      So far, there are 179 cases of leptospirosis and the Government said it expects an increase in typhoid, dengue fever and leptospirosis cases...

          The Ministry of Health has reported four new deaths due to leptospirosis and one death due to typhoid.

          Permanent Secretary for Health Doctor James Fong says poor health-seeking behaviour was a significant factor that contributed to these deaths.

          There are now 27 deaths from leptospirosis this year...

              SUVA, March 10 (Xinhua) -- Fiji has recorded 991 cases of leptospirosis with 29 deaths this year, 53 cases of typhoid with five deaths and 965 confirmed cases of dengue fever, according to the Health Ministry.

              Fijians are being urged to be aware of the symptoms associated with leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue and diarrhoea (LTDD) cases and to seek medical assistance early as reports showed that many infected people were presenting themselves late to the hospital...

                  Leptospirosis outbreak continues in Fiji’s major divisions

                  The outbreak of leptospirosis in Fiji’s four major divisions is still ongoing, with cases and hospital admissions continued to be reported.

                  So far this year, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services says there have been 1230 lab-confirmed cases.

                  Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong said 240 new cases were reported since the last update announcement a week ago, 94 more cases recorded for previous weeks, and an additional 145 cases in the last week.

                  He provided a breakdown of cases in the four divisions:

                  Central Division – there have been 436 cases, 77 more cases for previous weeks and 100 cases in the last week;
                  Western Division – 488 cases, with 42 new cases in the last week, and 56 more reported for previous weeks;
                  Northern Division – 270 cases, with seven in the last week, and nine more reported for previous weeks; and
                  Eastern Division – 36 cases, with five in the last week, and seven more reported for previous weeks.

                  Dr Fong said 380 people had been admitted in hospitals for leptospirosis so far this year...

                    More cases of leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue fever reported in Fiji

                    SUVA, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Fiji has reported more cases of leptospirosis, typhoid and dengue fever in recent days.

                    According to Fiji's news website Fijivillage on Tuesday, Fiji's Health Ministry confirmed that the island nation recorded 91 leptospirosis cases with two deaths last week.

                    Currently, the country has a total of more than 1,000 leptospirosis cases and 31 deaths this year.

                    Meanwhile, there have been 83 confirmed cases and five deaths of typhoid fever in Fiji this year with seven new cases last week...

                        35 die of leptospirosis in Fiji

                        SUVA, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Fiji confirmed on Saturday four more deaths from leptospirosis in recent days, bringing the total deaths from the disease to 35 so far this year.

                        According to Fiji Broadcasting Corporation, Fiji's Permanent Secretary for Health James Fong said that all the new deaths, aged from 17 to 55, occurred in Lautoka, the second largest city in Fiji, between April 1 and April 4 this year.

                        There have been 1,638 lab-confirmed cases of leptospirosis so far this year in Fiji...

                          Leptospirosis and typhoid continue to claim lives with two more succumbing to the disease.

                          The death brings the number of leptospirosis fatalities to 36, and typhoid to six – so far this year.

                          Fiji’s Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong said the most recent death involved a 15-year-old male who was presented to Nausori Health Centre on April 6 with leptospirosis and died on the same day...
