Lassa fever kills 149 in four months, says NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Wednesday disclosed that 149 citizens have so far lost their lives to Lassa fever in 2022.
According to the report, Edo and Ondo states were currently leading in the number of deaths reported so far.

No fewer than 723 cases have been managed at the case management centre for the Lassa fever disease.
The PUNCH reports that the death toll from the disease has continued to rise as the country has so far reported 151 deaths.
Twenty-three states have also reported confirmed cases of the disease.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control noted this on its website on Sunday’s Lassa fever situation report.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has disclosed that death toll from the 2022 outbreak of Lassa fever is now 152.
The centre made this known in its latest Lassa fever situation report obtained by The PUNCH on Tuesday.
The PUNCH reports that Lassa fever, an animal-borne, or zoonotic, acute viral illness spread by the common African rat also known as the mastomys rat species is endemic to Nigeria and some other West African countries.
Since the last outbreak of the disease in 2016, the NCDC noted that there had been an increase in the number of recurring cases.
In 2019, the centre noted that 796 cases were reported, while in 2020, 1,165 cases were confirmed during the height of the pandemic.
The NCDC also confirmed a total of 4,632 suspected cases in 2021.
The centre stated, “So far in 2022, 152 people have lost their lives; the highest deaths reported in four years.
“Cumulatively, from week 1 to week 18 in 2022, 152 deaths have been reported with a case fatality rate of 19.6%.
“In total, for 2022, 23 states have recorded at least one confirmed case across 95 local government areas. Of all confirmed cases, 68% are from states namely, Ondo (28%), Edo (25%) and Bauchi (15%).
“The predominant age-group affected is 21-30 years (range:1 to 80 years, median age: 30 years). The number of suspected cases has increased compared to that reported for the same period in 2021.”
The NCDC noted that while 51 health workers have been affected, 723 persons have been hospitalized...Comment

The latest report from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Wednesday has revealed that the country has so far recorded 153 deaths in 2022.
The PUNCH reports that the figure of deaths reported as of May 2022 is higher than the deaths of 58 persons reported in May 2021.
Lassa fever, an animal-borne, or zoonotic, acute viral illness spread by the common African rat also known as the mastomys rat species, is endemic in Nigeria and some other West African countries.

Lassa fever deaths increase to 155 – NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has revealed that the death toll from Lassa fever has increased to 155 as of June 5, 2022.
The report stated that while three States – Ondo, Edo and Bauchi- accounted for 68 per cent of all confirmed cases, there have been 782 confirmed cases of the disease with 4,939 suspected cases.
The NCDC’s report further revealed that this year alone while a cumulative of 742 people were managed at treatment centres, 52 health workers have been affected by the disease.
As part of its efforts to control and curtail the spread of the disease, the NCDC stated that it has sent Lassa fever alert letters to States.
It said it has activated the National Emergency Operations Centre response mode Level 2 for effective multi-sectoral, multi-disciplinary coordination of 2022 Lassa fever outbreak response...Comment

Lassa fever kills 158 in 24 states within 6 months

Lassa fever have claimed 158 lives in 24 states since the beginning of this year, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has said.
The NCDC, in its situation report yesterday, said the cases were recorded across 99 local government areas.
It said of all confirmed cases, 68 percent were from Ondo (29 percent); Edo, 25 percent and Bauchi, 14 percent.
“The predominant age-group affected is 21-30 years (Range: 1 to 90 years, Median Age:30 years). The male to female ratio for confirmed cases is 1:0.9,” the report stated.
“Cumulatively from week 1 to week 24, 2022, 158 deaths have been reported with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 19.8 percent which is lower than the CFR for the same period in 2021 (20.5 percent).
For the epidemiological week 24, the NCDC said the number of new confirmed cases increased from seven in week 23 to eight cases. These were reported from Ondo, Edo and Plateau States...Comment

Lassa fever killed 159 in six months – NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control confirmed that 53 health workers were infected with Lassa fever, bringing the death toll to 159 from January to June 26.

Lassa fever cases rise to 829, 160 deaths

The number of Lassa fever infections since the beginning of the year is 829, with 160 deaths, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
The latest situation report released for week 26 by the NCDC also showed that there are 5,510 suspected cases of the infection across 98 Local Government Areas in 24 states.
Lassa fever is a viral haemorrhagic fever and an acute viral illness and the zoonotic disease has a high morbidity and mortality rate and economic and health security implications.
Following the outbreak of the viral infection this year, the National Emergency Operations Centre response mode Level 2 was activated for effective multi-sectoral, and multi-disciplinary coordination.
The report showed that of all confirmed cases, 68% are from Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi States.
“In week 26, the number of new confirmed cases decreased from 10 in week 25, 2022, to 9 cases. These were reported from Ondo, Edo, and Benue States.

Lassa fever cases hit 842, Ondo, others lead

Ondo, Edo and Bauchi States are leading the Lassa fever infections chart as confirmed cases from the disease stand at 842 with 160 deaths.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control disclosed this in its latest situation report on the outbreak of the disease in the country.
Lassa fever is a viral haemorrhagic fever and an acute viral illness and the zoonotic disease has a high morbidity and mortality rate and economic and health security implications.
Data from the report for Week 27, which covered July 4 to 10, revealed that there were 5649 suspected cases of the disease in the week under review.
“In week 27, the number of new confirmed cases increased from 9 in week 26, 2022 to 13 cases. These were reported from Ondo, Edo, Plateau, and Anambra States.
“Cumulatively from week 1 to week 27, 2022, 160 deaths have been reported with case fatality rate (CFR) of 19.0% which is lower than the CFR for the same period in 2021 (23.7%).

164 die of Lassa fever as cases jump to 857

THE Lassa fever cases in Nigeria have jumped to 857 and 164 people have so far died from the disease in the first seven months of 2022.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said this in its latest Lassa fever situation report for week 29, which showed that there were 857 confirmed cases of the disease in the country.
The NCDC said that the cases were distributed across 24 states and 99 local government areas in the country.
It said that 54 healthcare workers had been infected with the disease.
“A breakdown indicated that of all confirmed cases, Ondo has 30 per cent Edo, 26 per cent and Bauchi 14 per cent states.
“In week 29, the number of new confirmed cases increased from five in week 28, 2022 to cases. These were reported from Edo and Ondo States.
