    Lassa Fever: Nigeria records 11 new deaths – NCDC

    Nigeria on Wednesday witnessed an additional 11 deaths from the ongoing Lassa fever outbreak, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has disclosed.

    This brings the number of total deaths recorded from the ongoing outbreak to 132.

    NCDC said in its situation report for last week that though cases are on a decline, Nigeria recorded 85 new confirmed cases and 11 deaths.

    Nigeria in the last ten weeks has been battling the scourge of the Lassa fever outbreak in Nigeria...

        Medical doctor dies of Lassa Fever in Edo

        - A medical doctor has lost life to Lassa fever on Wednesday, April 1, in Edo state
        - The president of resident doctors association, Aliyu Sokomba, said the deceased contracted the fever from the patients he was treating in Benue state
        - Sokomba also raised a concern that many medical doctors across the country may have contacted the COVID-19 disease due to their unprotected exposure to infected patients

        A medical doctor has died of Lassa fever in Edo state, this was confirmed by the president of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Dr Aliyu Sokomba, Channels TV reports. Sokomba said on Wednesday, April 1, that the medical doctor who worked in Benue state died at the Irua Specialist Hospital in Edo state...

              Emergency phase of Lassa fever outbreak over- NCDC

              The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has declared the emergency phase of the 2020 Lassa fever outbreak over.

              This is following a successive decline in cases below the emergency threshold, and an epidemiological review carried out by NCDC and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

              On the 24th of January 2020, NCDC declared a Lassa fever outbreak and activated a national Lassa fever Emergency Operations Centre (EOC)..

                Lassa fever kills 15 in Ondo, Ebonyi as 2020 death toll hits 212

                Nigeria has recorded a total of 1,026 Lassa fever cases in 27 states in 2020.

                15 people died from Lassa fever infection in Nigeria in the final week of May 2020, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

                The acute viral haemorrhagic illness, caused by rodents, killed nine people in Ondo, and six people in Ebonyi as observed by Pulse in the Week 23 situation report released by the NCDC on Saturday, June 13.

                The agency had failed to publish a report for Week 22 (May 25 to May 31), the period when the 15 fatalities and six new cases were recorded.

                No new deaths were recorded in Week 23 (June 1 to June 7), with only five new cases in Ondo (3), and Edo (2).

                86 suspected cases in Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, and Ondo also returned negative results in Week 23, according to the situation report.

                However, the death toll jumped from 197 in the Week 21 report, to 212 in the Week 23 report, the case fatality rate shooting up from 19.4% to 20.7%.

                The total number of cases recorded since January 2020 now stands at 1,026, detected in 129 local government areas across 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja...

                    A total of 1,040 Lassa fever cases have been recorded across Nigeria since January 2020.

                    The number of people killed by Lassa fever in 2020 has risen to 218, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

                    The agency said in its latest situation report, released on Friday, July 3, that the acute viral haemorrhagic illness, caused by rodents, killed two people in Ondo State between June 22 and June 28.

                    A total of four new cases were also recorded within the reviewed week with three in Ondo, and one in Edo.

                    63 other suspected cases in Ondo, Edo, Kaduna, Kwara, and Plateau returned negative results.

                    The total number of cases recorded since January 2020 now stands at 1,040, detected in 129 local government areas across 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

                    The NCDC declared in April that the emergency phase of the 2020 Lassa fever outbreak was over because its case count dropped below levels considered to be a national emergency.

                    However, the agency's Director-General, Chikwe Ihekweazu, said Nigeria would continue to record Lassa fever cases even though the country had passed its usual January to April peak period...

                      Ondo tops Lassa fever cases in Nigeria — Govt On December 18, 20203:55 am

                      By Dayo Johnson Ondo State Government, yesterday, said that Lassa fever has killed over 80 persons in the state in one year. The Health Commissioner, Dr. Jibayo Adeyeye, said this in Owo, during a road walk sensitization on the eradication of disease in the state.

                      Adeyeye stated that despite the fatalities and scare caused by the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic, Lassa fever in 2020 killed more people in Ondo State. He said: “According to records, 18 percent fatalities were recorded from the total reported cases of Lassa fever in the state when compared to the less than 1 percent of COVID-19 related deaths in the state. “All the confirmed cases of the disease in Nigeria, 75 percent are from three states with Ondo State topping the chart with 36 percent. “We are in an unfortunate situation of COVID-19 all over the world. It has killed 41 people in Ondo State from January till now. “But Lassa fever has killed more than 80 people. 18 percent of Lassa fever victims have died compared to 1 percent of COVID-19...

                      ...Also speaking, the State Epidemiologist, Dr. Stephen Fagbemi, who was represented by Dr. Zaccaria Gbelela, maintained that the age group affected most by the disease is those between 21 and 30 years. Fagbemi added that from January till date, a total of 806 confirmed cases of Lassa fever were recorded with 204 deaths in the country.
