Lassa fever in Guinea: What does the Government envisage?

`CONAKRY-The Guinean Minister of Health has just clarified the occurrence of Lassa fever in Guinea, a deadly and dangerous disease. At the micro of Africaguinee.com, Edouard Niankoye Lamah announced the sending of several teams in the field to investigate people who have been in contact with the patient, a 35-year-old hospitalized in Mamou. The head of the health department also said there are no new cases reported to date.

"There have been no new cases. Tomorrow, we will send reinforcement teams at the two corners to find the contacts and the route of the patient. But that's technical, " told Africaguinee.com, the Minister of Health.

A case of lassa fever has been detected in Guinea, the country's health authorities announced on Saturday (February 2nd). This is a 35-year-old man from Kissidougou Prefecture who was admitted to the Mamou Regional Hospital on 28/01/2019.

Lassa fever is a deadly contagious disease. It manifests itself in the following main signs: Fever, chest pain, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, joint pain and in its most serious form by bleeding.

What is the number of contacts to date? The patient's family was quarantined? "We have to do the investigations to find all the contacts. A person who did two, three clinics, who went to the hospital in a city A for a city B, who left in a vehicle. We must find the vehicle, as much as possible the passengers. We must go up the whole chain. So, let us do the investigations, "said Lamah, adding that there is not even 12 hours since the new one was detected.

The Minister of Health invites people not to panic. According to him, there are medicines to cure Lassa.

"There is no need to panic. Do not compare this to Ebola, I will not venture into this area because Ebola hemorrhagic fever is more dangerous than Lassa fever. It's a reality. 90% of Ebola patients can die while for Lassa fever, there is at least medication. For Ebola, there are no curative drugs, but for Lasssa, there are, "he said.

Lassa Fever at Mamou: "We set up the strategy of follow-up contacts" dixit Dr. Sakoba (ANSS)

          By Guinee7 - February 5, 2019

In front of the press in Conakry on Monday, Dr. Sakoba Keita, Director General of the National Agency of Sanitary Security (ANSS) gave details concerning the situation having contracted the lassa fever in the Republic of Guinea, but also of the arrangements made for prevent the disease from spreading.

Speaking, the director of the ANSS first said: "our compatriot who was a victim of this disease and who was received by Mamou January 28 died on January 29".

Before explaining: "This gentleman has fallen ill, if we calculate it in relation to today, about three weeks ago. So he was received in several private clinics in Kissidougou, he came in emergency at the hospital, but as at the beginning of this disease the signs are very confused with malaria which is very common with us and also signs of fever typhoid, so it is these diagnoses that have been caused and he has benefited from these treatments. And as it was not going well, his parents went to look for him in Kissidougou, because he is from Mamou and that is how Mamou received him in late phase and the bleeding had already begun. It was then a few hours later he died... But at the time we did not know that it was really fever lassa, so I confirm that the diagnosis, we received it February 1. It is at 4 pm that the laboratory wrote to us to say that it is indeed a case of the Lassa Fever ".

Further, Sakoba Keita emphasizes: "We conducted our public health actions, first our agent who received him was thinking of an Ebola case. So they took all the measures, the census of the contacts, the sanitation and even the disinfection of the premises both at the level of the hospital and at the level of the home and its burial was accompanied so that we could take less risk of propagation ".

According to him, all the contacts of Mamou are already registered, "all those who participated in his funeral and the members of his family who had contact with him. We put in place the strategy of follow-up of the contacts, we take their temperatures every morning using the thermo-flashes and at the first signs we will take samples and isolated them in our centers of treatment ... I can not for the moment delivered the number because investigations are underway not only at Mamou, but also at Kissidougou ".

Lassa fever in Guinea: another suspect dies at Mamou hospital

A woman with warning signs of lassa fever was admitted yesterday, Thursday, February 07, 2019, to the Mamou Regional Hospital. This suspect, whose identity has not yet been revealed to the general public, died a few hours after being taken to the epidemiological diseases treatment center of the hospital.

If the results of the laboratory tests conclude with lassa fever, this case would bring to two, in less than two weeks, the number of people who died as a result of this haemorrhagic disease which can be transmitted to humans by rodents.

According to information entrusted to Guineematin.com on Friday, this suspicious case has been reported in Our?-Kaba, a sub-prefecture located about sixty kilometers from the capital of the prefecture of Mamou. The woman (whose identity was not revealed) was vomiting blood. She was evacuated to Mamou where he was admitted to the Epidemiological Disease Treatment Center at the Regional Hospital compound.

Joined on the phone by a journalist from Guineematin.com, the general director of the Mamou regional hospital, Dr. Abdoulaye Kader Camara, confirmed this information while adding that samples have already been sent to Coankry for laboratory analyzes in order to to know if it is, yes or no, fever of lassa.

"Indeed, yesterday (Thursday), we were questioned by our agents about the case of a patient who is in Our?-kaba. And, who would suspect lassa fever. Because he vomited blood. Immediately, a team was mobilized. We went to get the patient. From there (Our?-kaba) even, samples were taken and sent to Conakry for results, "said Dr. Kader Camara, adding that all the arrangements were already made at the regional hospital of Mamou to welcome the patient.

"As soon as he (the patient) arrived at the regional hospital, around 4 pm, continues Dr. Kader Camara, the care began with the treatment prescribed for this purpose. Very unfortunately, at one o'clock in the morning, he gave up the ghost. Currently, we are in the phase of the treatment of the body for a safe burial, "said the doctor, joined on the phone by Guineematin.com a little more, in the day of this Friday.

Regarding the results of the samples sent to Conakry, the Director General of the Regional Hospital of Mamou indicates that it is necessary to wait at least 6 hours to have the results of the laboratory. However, before the results come, says Dr. Kader Camara, "It can not be said that this is lassa fever. But, it is still a suspect who presents the signs of the said disease ".

On January 28, a confirmed case of lassa fever was already recorded in Mamou prefecture. The patient, a 35-year-old man, had come from Kissidougou. He died the next day (January 29) at the Mamou Regional Hospital. And, according to the health authorities of Guinea, 82 contacts were recorded in the prefectures of Kissidougou and Mamou. "These contacts are currently being followed. None of them has yet shown signs of lassa fever, "reassured the director general of the ANSS (National Agency for Health Security), Dr. Sakoba Keita, who received reporters this week.

But, for the Director General of the Mamou Regional Hospital, Dr. Abdoulaye Kader Camara, "none of the contacts identified at Mamou has any connection with the patient from Kissidougou who died as a result of Lassa fever."
