COMMUNICATION FROM THE GOVERNMENT FOLLOWING THE DETECTION OF A CASE OF FIEVRE LASSA

The health authorities of the Ministry of Health were informed by the Mamou Prefectural Health Directorate of the detection of a case of Lassa fever. This is a 35-year-old man from Kissidougou Prefecture who was admitted to the Mamou Regional Hospital on 28/01/2019.
The blood test result of 01/02/2019 confirmed the presence of Lassa haemorrhagic fever.
For the moment no other case has been notified. In accordance with the International Health Regulations (IHR), a crisis meeting was held on the premises of the National Health Security Agency (ANSS) on 02 February 2019.
This meeting brought together, in addition to officials from the Ministry of Health, Livestock and Environment, many partners.
At the end of this meeting, it was decided to send an on-site investigation mission to support the health teams of Mamou and Kissidougou prefectures in their efforts to control this disease.
Information on Lassa fever Disease and control measures
Lassa fever is a viral haemorrhagic disease transmitted by rodents (small mice) to humans through body fluids (blood, urine and saddle).
It manifests itself in the following main signs:
Fever, chest pain, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, joint pain and in its most severe form by bleeding.
Anyone with these signs especially those from Mamou and Kissidougou prefectures should go to the nearest health facility.
Other measures:
1- Wash your hands regularly;
2- Wash all cooking utensils with clean water and soap and keep them safe from rodents;
3- To remove from the dwellings garbage and garbage of all kinds;
4- Avoid any manipulation or consumption of rodents;
5- Avoid contact with urine and rodent feces; Avoid handling without protection the organic secretions (blood, urine, saddle, etc.) of any patient presenting with fever with or without bleeding;
6- To fight against the presence of rodents in places of residence and any place receiving public (hotels, restaurants, maquis, etc.).
In any case, the Ministry of Health remains at the disposal of the population to provide information on the evolution and additional measures of control of this disease.
