Alert in Mexico after death from acute childhood hepatitis
Mexico City, May 20 (Prensa Latina) The alarm went off today in Mexico after the confirmation of the death in Hidalgo of a minor apparently due to acute childhood hepatitis, the newspaper Milenio reported today.

    CDT06:34 (GMT) -0400

Dr. Alejandro Efraín Benítez, secretary of health of that neighboring state of Mexico City, confirmed that a three-year-old minor hospitalized in the capital died of acute childhood hepatitis of unknown origin.

The death would have occurred yesterday but there is a lot of confusion because the child was negative for all known viral hepatitis results in the country, so he was classified as a patient who presented severe acute disease of unknown cause, he said.

Milenio reports that the state official made statements to Radio Formula in which he highlighted that although the name of the disease suffered by the minor was "severe acute hepatitis of unknown origin", he is a child because it is being observed in pediatric age.

Likewise, Benítez mentioned that there were four suspected cases of severe acute hepatitis; one is that of an eight-year-old girl and the other three cases of family contagion, however, in the first case the new syndrome was ruled out.

"We haven't had any major complications with the three children who could have severe hepatitis, but it's still being ruled out," he added.

Precisely shortly before, the Mexican Ministry of Health had estimated that there could be 25 possible cases in eight states of the country, although they were still suspected and there was no definition.

The Undersecretary of Health, Hugo López-Gatell, assured that neither in Mexico nor in the world is there evidence to confirm or rule out the cause of this hepatitis. It cannot be affirmed that it is infectious, but neither is it that it is not.

He assured that so far the evidence both in Mexico and in the world suggests that this hepatitis of unknown origin is not a rapidly spreading disease, and the World Health Organization warned more than a month ago that it crossed the European borders where it was detected and It may have affected girls and boys in Mexico, he warned.

Yesterday's news about the death and confirmed today by Benítez triggers the alarms in the health system, indicated its authorities, which explain that this disease is different from what has been known throughout history, which generates some concern. to health institutions.

However, the problem has not yet evolved into an emergency situation in Mexico or in the world, the secretariat said.
