    Hepatitis A in Florida

    From January 1, 2018 through June 6, 2020, 4,577 hepatitis A cases were reported.


    The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting health care seeking behavior, which may be impacting the diagnosis and reporting of hepatitis A cases that are shown in this report. For more information on the COVID-19 pandemic in Florida, please visit FloridaHealthCOVID-19.gov.
    January 1, 2018 – June 6, 2020

    Since January 2019, there have been more than 3,200 cases in Florida associated with the Hepatitis A public health emergency. While this outbreak has not yet ended, the weekly and monthly new case totals are trending downward. To support and continue the current downward trend in new cases, remember to VEST against hepatitis A: Vaccinate, Educate yourself, practice basic Sanitation by washing your hands, and know that FDOH and our health partners are Tracking the virus with the goal of bringing this outbreak to an end.
    From January 1, 2018 through June 6, 2020, 4,577 hepatitis A cases were reported.
    The number of reported hepatitis A cases more than doubled from 2016 to 2017 and nearly doubled again in 2018 after remaining relatively stable in previous years. Case counts in 2019 saw an over 500% increase from 2018.
    Counties that reported a hepatitis A case last week are outlined in black. Since January 1, 2018, 98% of cases have likely been acquired locally in Florida.
    There were 15 hepatitis A cases reported last week. Case counts in weeks prior to the public health emergency declaration are shown in light red while case counts in weeks since are shown in red.
    From May 31, 2020 to June 6, 2020, county health departments (CHDs) administered 123 (19%) of the total 631 first doses of hepatitis A vaccine administered to adults age 18 years and older, as recorded in Florida SHOTS. In 2019 CHDs have administered 159,486 vaccinations and non-CHDs have administered 206,643 vaccinations for a total of 366,129 vaccinations. Vaccinations given before the public health emergency declaration are shown in lighter colors than those given after.
