Hepatitis A virus cases in Alabama continue to climb

Alabama health officials are warning of a Hepatitis A outbreak in the state, which has reached Houston County...As of Jan. 2, that number had risen to 229 cases of Hepatitis A in Alabama, said ADPH Southeastern District Administrator Corey Kirkland.

Hepatitis A Outbreak Includes Jefferson County
An outbreak of Hepatitis A has been reported in 21 counties in Alabama, and now includes Jefferson County.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL ? The Alabama Department of Health reports 132 confirmed cases of Hepatitis A in 21 Alabama counties, a group that now includes Alabama's most populous county.
The outbreak which began last September in northeast Alabama has now spread to Jefferson County. Three cases of Hepatitis A were confirmed in July in Jefferson County, and 30 cases statewide - which is the highest number of monthly cases since the outbreak began nearly a year ago.
The Alabama Department of Health says persons at highest risk for Hepatitis A include users of illegal substances, homeless persons, men with same sex partners, and close contacts. Health officials said 63 percent of the victims are men with an average age of 39. The majority of cases were spread by street drug use...

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - State health officials say the hepatitis A outbreak is now hitting Madison and Marshall counties.
There are now 8 cases reported in Marshall County and three cases in Madison. County.
When three cases or more are reported it reaches outbreak status.
There has been a hepatitis A outbreak in Jackson and DeKalb counties over the last several months with numbers now reaching 29 and 25 cases, respectively...

Hepatitis outbreak in Alabama growing

The hepatitis outbreak in Alabama has now grown, reaching Etowah County.
There are now 90 cases statewide, with 46 people hospitalized.
There are 15 confirmed cases of Hepatitis-A in Etowah County.
Other counties affected by the outbreak include Cherokee County with two cases and Blount County with one case...

The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) continues investigating a hepatitis A outbreak in DeKalb and Jackson counties. Additional cases that may be related have also been identified in Cherokee and Marshall Counties, with March 3 as the latest known symptom onset.

The Alabama Department of Public Health recently released information that there is a hepatitis A outbreak in DeKalb and Jackson County.
Medical Officer Karen Landers said an outbreak means there has been a minimum of two cases.
?Currently by case definition, which means the person who has hepatitis A meets certain parameters of illness as defined by the CDC, we have eight cases at the moment in DeKalb County,? Landers said...
...The eight cases of hepatitis A in DeKalb County have been identified as part of the high-risk population, Landers said.
?The persons who have been effected have been people who are high-risk, such as those experiencing homelessness, who would have less access to bathroom facilities for handwashing and the injectable and oral drug abuse population,? she said...

(WAFF) - State health officials are warning of a heptatitis A outbreak in Jackson and DeKalb counties.
So far there are 17 people in Jackson and DeKalb counties that have tested positive for hepatitis A, and health officials say that number could rise.
