    Health department investigating Hepatitis A outbreak in Louisiana

    BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) announced Tuesday the Louisiana Office of Public Health is investigating an outbreak of Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infections.

    As of Dec. 14, Louisiana has 24 reported cases of HAV infection, three of which are not linked to the current outbreak. That?s nearly three times the number of cases LDH saw in 2017.

    East Baton Rouge Parish and surrounding parishes, including Livingston and Ascension parishes, has fewer than five HAV cases. Morehouse Parish has between five to ten reported cases, according to a map that lists the HAV cases by parish...

    How Many Cases are There in Louisiana Since 1999, when routine HAV immunization of children was recommended by the ACIP of the CDC, the number of yearly reported cases of hepatitis A fell dramatically from over 200 cases in 1999 to only eight cases reported in 2017 in Louisiana. Over the past ten years, an average of nine cases are reported each year (Figure 1).

    As of December 21, 2018, Louisiana has 29 reported cases of HAV infection, three of which are not linked to the current outbreak.

          Louisiana?s Hepatitis A outbreak is growing, with 305 new cases since an outbreak was declared last December. Assistant State Health Officer Dr. Joseph Kanter says while we haven?t seen outbreaks in the thousands like other states, it?s still a significantly more cases than normal.

          ?Typically, in Louisiana, every year we see between five and fifteen cases of Hepatitis A, so to have 300 cases, in less than 12 months, is very concerning for us.?...

            Ongoing hepatitis A outbreak in Louisiana doubles in just two months

            In a typical year, Louisiana sees about nine cases of hepatitis A, a liver infection that causes fatigue, jaundice, nausea and in rare instances death.

            But almost 100 new cases of hepatitis A have been reported in just the last month, according to the state Department of Health.

            Louisiana is one of several states in the midst of a hepatitis A outbreak that shows no signs of slowing down, despite efforts to stamp it out.

            Total Louisiana cases related to the outbreak, which started in January 2018, have more than doubled just in the past two months. In May, the number of 2019 cases related to the outbreak was 173. By June, the total number of reported cases jumped to 278, and it had reached 375 by July 18.

            The outbreak is spreading mostly among drug users and homeless people, according to Dr. Frank Welch, the medical director for Louisiana?s Bureau of Community Preparedness. It's most concentrated in Livingston and East Baton Rouge parishes, which account for 160 to 200 of the cases...
