What you need to know about Arizona's hepatitis A outbreak
      Stephanie Innes, Arizona Republic Published 5:00 a.m. MT April 30, 2019 | Updated 10:30 a.m. MT April 30, 2019

Arizona is in the midst of a hepatitis A outbreak that could take months to contain.

An outbreak of the viral liver disease began in November in the Tucson area and, in spite of vaccination efforts, cases have continued to rise.

The outbreak is happening in Maricopa County, too. The cases are primarily among homeless and near-homeless individuals, as well as people who use illicit drugs.

So far in 2019, there have been 212 cases reported in Arizona, which is higher than any yearly statewide total in more than a decade, state data shows, and state health officials expect that number to rise.

There have been no Arizona deaths from the disease this year, but many of those infected have been hospitalized, public health officials say.

The majority of Arizona's hepatitis A cases have been concentrated in the Tucson area, which has cost Pima County at least $200,000 through March, Pima County Health Department's Deputy Director Paula Mandel said...

The Arizona Department of Corrections (ADC) has confirmed two cases of hepatitis A in inmates in state prisons.

Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection caused by a virus, and is normally transmitted from person to person or through contaminated food or water. Symptoms range from nausea and joint pain to yellowing of the skin.

Spokesman Andrew Wilder says both inmates were admitted to ADC in May.

"There are two inmates who have recently been diagnosed with active hepatitis A infections, one at the state prison in Florence, and one at the Perryville women?s prison," he said...

Arizona's ongoing hepatitis A outbreak has turned deadly
            Stephanie Innes, Arizona Republic Published 1:21 p.m. MT May 31, 2019 | Updated 1:35 p.m. MT May 31, 2019

State health officials Friday confirmed two deaths from Arizona's ongoing hepatitis A outbreak.

The outbreak, which began in the Tucson area in November, is now up to 341 cases, and 80 percent of them have required hospitalization, Arizona Department of Health Services director Dr. Cara Christ said.

Officials this week also announced that two inmates at Arizona corrections facilities have tested positive for the disease.

The viral liver disease is primarily occurring in people who are homeless, near-homeless, were recently incarcerated or who misuse drugs.

Though it began in Pima County, it has since spread to six other counties ? Maricopa, Cochise, Graham, Mohave, Pinal and Navajo.

Citing patient privacy, state health officials would not disclose any information about the two people who died, including gender, age or location...
