    Hepatitis A in Florida

    January 1, 2018 ? July 20, 2019

    From January 1, 2018 through July 20, 2019, 2,526 hepatitis A cases were reported.
    The number of reported hepatitis A cases more than doubled from 2016 to 2017 and nearly doubled again in 2018 after remaining relatively stable in previous years. Case counts in 2019 have already surpassed those in 2018.
    Counties that reported a hepatitis A case in week 28 (7/14/19?7/20/19) are outlined in black. Since January 1, 2018, 98% of cases have likely been acquired locally in Florida.
    There were 77 hepatitis A cases reported in week 29 (7/14/19?7/20/19). Weekly case counts have steadily increased overall since week 1, 2018.
    The Florida Department of Health is actively working to vaccinate those most at risk for hepatitis A infection. Since October 2018, the number of first doses of hepatitis A vaccine administered by both private providers and county health departments to adults age 18 years and older, as recorded in Florida SHOTS, remained well above the previous 5-year-average. In week 29 (7/14/19?7/20/19), 5,172 doses were administered. Vaccination is the best way to prevent hepatitis A infection.

      From January 1, 2018 through July 27, 2019, 2,582 hepatitis A cases were reported.
      The number of reported hepatitis A cases more than doubled from 2016 to 2017 and nearly doubled again in 2018 after remaining relatively stable in previous years. Case counts in 2019 have already surpassed those in 2018.
      Counties that reported a hepatitis A case in week 28 (7/21/19?7/27/19) are outlined in black. Since January 1, 2018, 98% of cases have likely been acquired locally in Florida.
      There were 53 hepatitis A cases reported in week 30 (7/21/19?7/27/19). Weekly case counts have steadily increased overall since week 1, 2018.
      The Florida Department of Health is actively working to vaccinate those most at risk for hepatitis A infection. Since October 2018, the number of first doses of hepatitis A vaccine administered by both private providers and county health departments to adults age 18 years and older, as recorded in Florida SHOTS, remained well above the previous 5-year-average.               From September 22, 2019 to September 28, 2019, county health departments (CHDs) administered 2,205 (42%) of the total 5,285 first doses of hepatitis A vaccine administered to adults age 18 years and older, as recorded in Florida SHOTS. In 2019 CHDs have administered 90,982 vaccinations and non-CHDs have administered 129,202 vaccinations for a total of 220,184 vaccinations.                     From November 24, 2019 to November 30, 2019, county health departments (CHDs) administered 1,058 (39%) of the total 2,682 first doses of hepatitis A vaccine administered to adults age 18 years and older, as recorded in Florida SHOTS. In 2019 CHDs have administered 121,425 vaccinations and non-CHDs have administered 166,760 vaccinations for a total of 288,185 vaccinations.                       January 1, 2018 – December 14, 2019

                      Since January 2019, there have been more than 3,200 cases in Florida associated with the Hepatitis A public health emergency. While this outbreak has not yet ended, the weekly and monthly new case totals are trending downward. To support and continue the current downward trend in new cases, remember to VEST against hepatitis A: Vaccinate, Educate yourself, practice basic Sanitation by washing your hands, and know that FDOH and our health partners are Tracking the virus with the goal of bringing this outbreak to an end.
                      From January 1, 2018 through December 14, 2019, 3,826 hepatitis A cases were reported.
                      The number of reported hepatitis A cases more than doubled from 2016 to 2017 and nearly doubled again in 2018 after remaining relatively stable in previous years. Case counts in 2019 have already surpassed those in 2018.
                      Counties that reported a hepatitis A case last week are outlined in black. Since January 1, 2018, 98% of cases have likely been acquired locally in Florida.

                      From December 8, 2019 to December 14, 2019, county health departments (CHDs) administered 1,891 (47%) of the total 4,045 first doses of hepatitis A vaccine administered to adults age 18 years and older, as recorded in Florida SHOTS. In 2019 CHDs have administered 125,825 vaccinations and non-CHDs have administered 172,078 vaccinations for a total of 297,903 vaccinations. Vaccinations given before the public health emergency declaration are shown in lighter colors than those given after. Since declaration of the PHE, CHDs have administered 60,145 and non-CHDs have administered 89,196 vaccinations.
