    'Hepatitis A' outbreak declared in Martin County after 13 confirmed cases

    STUART, Fla. (CBS12) ? There is an outbreak of Hepatitis A in Martin County, leaders declared Friday.

    Health experts confirmed 13 cases of the virus in the county.

    The announcement came after a couple in their sixties died of complications from Hepatitis A at their home in Palm City last month.

    Health experts say they have not been able to isolate the source of the outbreak.

    The cases started to surface in January. On Monday, after having five new cases confirmed, the county said it became a high-risk area.

    Florida has seen 1200 cases of Hepatitis A statewide, with eight deaths...

    Statewide, Hepatitis A cases were three times higher than in 2018 than the five-year average. But in Orange County, there were 123 cases in 2018 ? more than 55 times the normal amount of cases. And in 2019 so far, we?re already at 15 times the five-year average of cases.

    MIAMI - A Miami restaurant worker has tested positive for hepatitis A, the Florida Department of Health announced late Friday.

    Health officials advised people who dined at Primo's Italian Kitchen and Bar in the 1700 block of North Bayshore Drive between Jan. 26 and Feb. 7 to seek medical treatment. A vaccination against hepatitis A within two weeks of exposure can prevent infection, the officials said. ..

    The number of reported hepatitis A cases steadily increased each month since April 2018 and remained above the previous 5-year average in January 2019. The number of cases reported in January increased from the previous month.
    From January 1, 2019 through January 31, 2019, 189 hepatitis A cases were reported in 26 counties.
    The number of reported hepatitis A cases more than doubled from 2016 to 2017 after remaining relatively stable in previous years. Case counts in January 2019 are higher than those seen in January of previous years, as noted by the white bar in the figure.

    The 189 hepatitis A cases in January were reported in the 26 counties outlined in black. The central Florida region had the highest hepatitis A activity levels. Since January 1, 2018, 97% of cases have likely been acquired locally in Florida.




    The best way to prevent hepatitis A infection is through vaccination.Since January 1, 2018, 97% of people with hepatitis A had never received a documented dose of hepatitis A vaccine. In January 2019, 95% of infected people had not received the vaccine. Hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for all children at age 1 year and for certain high-risk groups of adults including illegal drug users and men who have sex with men.     From January 1, 2018 through December 31, 2018, 559 hepatitis A cases were reported in 31 counties. The number of reported hepatitis A cases more than doubled from 2016 to 2017 after remaining relatively constant in previous years. Case counts in 2018 have exceeded those seen in previous years and are more than double the case counts in the last 5 years.


    The number of reported hepatitis A cases steadily increased each month since April 2018 and has remained at or above the previous 5-year average all year. The number of cases reported in December increased from the previous month and was the highest reported in 2018.


    The 147 hepatitis A cases in December were reported in the 22 counties outlined in black. The central Florida region had the highest hepatitis A activity levels in 2018. In 2018, 96% of cases have likely been acquired locally in Florida.

    TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The Florida Department of Health (department) issued a health advisory Wednesday to inform the public of an increase in hepatitis A cases in Florida and outbreaks reported across the country.

    The advisory reemphasized the importance of the hepatitis A vaccination.

    Since January 2018, 385 cases of hepatitis A virus infection have been reported in Florida. This is more than three times the previous five-year average of 126 cases. Florida?s cases are beginning to mirror national trends as local and state health departments across the country have worked closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to respond to similar outbreaks since March 2017...

    ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (FOX 35 WOFL) - If you've made a trip to Disney Springs recently, as the Orange County Health Department is warning visitors of a recent health danger.

    According to this department, a worker at Disney Spring's Morimoto Asia restaurant tested positive for Hepatitis A. So, anyone who ate or drank there between November 6th and November 16th may have been exposed...

    ST. PETE BEACH, FL -- The Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County has identified a positive case of hepatitis A in a food service worker in St. Pete Beach.

    Following lab confirmation on Nov. 1, DOH-Pinellas immediately began conducting an epidemiological investigation and today determined the individual worked at Toasted Monkey Beachbar & Sportsgrill at 6110 Gulf Blvd. between October 17 and 28.
