Hepatitis A case confirmed at Cracker Barrell
    Oct 29, 2018
    From staff reports

MINERAL WELLS ? A case of hepatitis A has been confirmed in an employee at Cracker Barrell in Mineral Wells.

The Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department said this morning that the risk of contracting hepatitis A from the restaurant is low, but people who have not been vaccinated against the viral infection of the liver and consumed food there between Oct. 15-21 are advised to continue getting the vaccine.

To help prevent infection, the vaccine should be administered not more than two weeks from the potential exposure. Today is the two-week mark from the first potential exposure date.

A health department assessment found the risk to restaurant patrons was low, the release says. The restaurant voluntarily closed to clean and sanitize and was reopened after a health department inspection, it says.

No cases of exposure from Cracker Barrell have been reported...

Confirmed: Another Raleigh County food service worker infected with Hepatitis A
By Pete Davis in News | November 15, 2018 at 12:04PM

GHENT, W.Va. ? The Beckley-Raleigh County Health Department announced on Thursday that a second case of a food service worker infected with Hepatitis A has been confirmed, following the announcement earlier this month that an employee of Cheddar?s Scratch Kitchen in Beckley was infected with the disease.

The latest incident occurred at Ghent Elementary School, south of Beckley. The health department said anyone who consumed food at the school between Oct. 21st and Nov. 9th should consider getting the Hepatitis A vaccine, not more than two weeks from the potential exposure. Inspectors were on-site at the school interviewing employees and reviewing food handling procedures. The Raleigh County Board of Education ordered that the entire building be sanitized...

State officials say hepatitis A outbreak has peaked in Cabell, Kanawha
By Lori Kersey Staff writer 23 min ago

A state health official said there's evidence to suggest the hepatitis A outbreak that started earlier this year has peaked in Kanawha and Cabell counties and cases are decreasing in those areas.

But Shannon McBee, senior epidemiologist overseeing the outbreak for the state Department of Health and Human Resources, said it's too soon to say if cases of the virus are decreasing statewide.

As of Dec. 7, there had been 2,018 cases of hepatitis A reported in the state since March, including 766 in Kanawha and 261 in Cabell, according to DHHR.

The outbreak has mostly affected the state's drug users, homeless and incarcerated populations.

McBee called the outbreak "unprecedented," in the state and the nation...

Since March 2018, the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health has reported an increase in the number of confirmed cases of acute hepatitis A virus. This increase in cases has primarily been among injection and non-injection drug users, homeless or mobile individuals, and those who have been recently incarcerated. Viral sequencing has linked cases from Kentucky and California.
