Hepatitis "A" outbreak in Salt Lake County

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Utah) There is now an outbreak of hepatitis A in Salt Lake County and health officials are working hard to prevent it from becoming an epidemic like it has in California.

San Diego has declared an emergency and officials there are power washing the streets with bleach after an epidemic has killed 16 people and made another 421 sick. 65% of those affected are homeless. Officials say it started with that population and spread.

Here's the ominous part of the story from Ilene Risk, head of epidemiology at the Salt Lake County Health Department. "It's been tested and we have the same type of hepatitis virus occurring here that's occurring in California."

She has confirmed 23 cases so far this year, most of them in the last two months. That compares to a yearly average of only 2 cases. Risk says 70% of them are homeless and a lot can be blamed on hygiene...

Hepatitis A Outbreak

Since January 1, 2017, Utah public health has identified 84 confirmed cases of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection; many among persons who are homeless and/or using illicit drugs. Several cases have been linked by investigation and/or viral sequencing to a national outbreak of hepatitis A involving cases in California and Arizona. Hospitalization rates of less than 40% have been described in previous hepatitis A outbreaks; however, other jurisdictions associated with this outbreak are reporting case hospitalization rates approaching 70%. The high rate of hospitalization may be a result of cases having underlying illnesses (e.g., alcoholism), or a higher rate of hepatitis comorbidities (e.g., hepatitis B or C). In response to the outbreak, public health officials have been working to identify cases and contacts, provide education, and ensure opportunities for vaccination of close contacts to cases and vulnerable populations.

Hepatitis A is usually spread through having oral contact with items contaminated with hepatitis A, for example, through ingesting food or drinks contaminated by infected feces. Some people do not develop symptoms, even if infected. If symptoms occur, they usually appear anywhere from 2-6 weeks after exposure. Symptoms usually develop over a period of several days, and may include jaundice (the yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes), abdominal pain, nausea or diarrhea. A hepatitis A outbreak that has reached the Utah County Jail in Spanish Fork is keeping the Utah County Health Department busy.

?It?s here, right in this jail,? said Steve Mickelson, the nursing director at the Health Department.

Utah County typically has one or two reported cases of hepatitis A a year. In 2017, there have been 25 reported cases of hepatitis A in Utah County as of Dec. 26, according to information from the Utah Department of Health...

Deadly disease at 7 Eleven sends authorities scrambling

Authorities are concerned that customers at a 7-Eleven located in Salt Lake City were exposed to hepatitis A, and they are urging recent customers to reach out to the health department so they can get an injection. The Salt Lake County Health Department released a statement indicating that an infected employee at a 7-Eleven in West Jordan worked while sick and may have handle items there.

It?s a huge exposure that could affect up to 2,000 people, even though it only affects that one store. Authorities say that people who visited the 7-Eleven, located at 2666 West 7800 South, between Dec. 26 and Jan. 3 are at risk, especially if they used the bathroom or consumed certain specific items like fresh fruit, fountain drinks, or anything from the hot food case...

Utah reports two deaths in hepatitis A outbreak, as health officials hope the disease?s spread has peaked

Two Salt Lake County residents have died from complications due to hepatitis A in the first deaths in Utah since an outbreak began last summer, county health officials announced Tuesday.

One fatality happened in January, officials said, but the Salt Lake County Health Department was unable to confirm the cause until this week due to other health problems affecting the patient. The second death occurred late last month, they said.

The outbreak, which originated in San Diego, has steadily spread among the homeless population in Salt Lake and Utah counties. As of this week, there had been 213 outbreak-associated cases confirmed by the Utah Department of Health, with about half of those requiring hospitalization...
