    Outbreak of Hepatitis A sweeps through three schools as 12 children are diagnosed with infection

    Hepatitis A has spread to third school in South Wales after just four weeks

    An outbreak of the viral infection hepatitis A has spread to a third school in South Wales, it has been confirmed.

    Public Health Wales has revealed a pupil at a primary school in Aberfan has contracted the condition - bringing the total number of cases to 12.

    Health bosses have insisted the school is not the source of the infection and said the pupil had been in contact with a confirm hepatitis A case outside of the school.

    This comes as a pupil at at secondary school in Penywaun, near Aberdare, was diagnosed on Tuesday...

    The number of hepatitis A cases has increased to 13, after Public Health Wales confirmed it was investigating more in connection with the Glyn-Gaer outbreak.

    The viral infection was initially detected at Glyn-Gaer Primary School, near Gelligaer, earlier in May.
    The latest case concerns a second pupil at Ysgol Rhydywaun, in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

    Heather Lewis, Consultant in Health Protection for Public Health Wales, said: ?This new case is a pupil at Ysgol Rhydywaun, where there was already a previously confirmed case...

      Public Health Wales said all of the cases have links that can be traced back to a Caerphilly school


      Two further cases of Hepatitis A have been diagnosed as part of the ongoing outbreak.

      This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 15 and one further suspected case is being investigated.

      All cases have links that can be traced back to Ysgol Glyn Gaer in Caerphilly , where the first patients were identified in April.

      Public Health Wales said successful vaccination sessions have been held both in that school and at Ysgol Rhydywaun, a secondary school in Rhondda Cynon Taf , where some of the cases are pupils.
