Mars Hill University works to limit viral outbreak

Mars Hill University officials are taking precautions to limit the spread of hand-foot-and-mouth disease.
Described by the Mayo Clinic ? a clinical and research health nonprofit ? as a ?minor illness causing only a few days of fever and relatively mild signs and symptoms,? hand-foot-and-mouth disease is a viral infection completely unrelated to foot-and-mouth disease ? sometimes called hoof-and-mouth disease ? which is an infectious viral disease found in farm animals.
The first diagnosis came in the last week of September, according to Mars Hill University Director of Communications Mike Thornhill. A total of 14 or 15 cases ? all in students ? followed over the next two weeks, Thornhill said in a phone interview.
?We?re hoping we?re now kind of past it,? Thornhill said. ?With Homecoming here (Oct. 6), we?re feeling we?re in pretty good shape for that, though we?ll make adjustments as necessary.?...

MARS HILL, NC (FOX Carolina) - A Mars Hill University spokesperson confirmed Friday that more than a dozen students have been diagnosed with hand, foot, and mouth disease.
Mike Thornhill, Director of Communications, said 14 students were diagnosed over the past two weeks.
?We had no new cases (Thursday), so we're hopeful that the spread has ended,? Thornhill stated in an email.
Students who have been diagnosed with the illness are being instructed to stay in their rooms and not attend class or extracurricular activities. Food is being delivered to them so they aren?t out in the general public...Tags: None
