    Hand, foot and mouth cases on the rise at schools in HCM City

    VietNamNet Bridge ? The number of hand, foot and mouth infections has surged at schools in HCM City, especially at kindergartens, according to the city?s Preventive Health Centre.

    Last month, an average of 150 children infected with hand, foot and mouth were hospitalised, Le Hong Nga, head of the centre?s infection control department, said.

    In the first eight months of the year, the city reported nearly 2,500 in-patients with hand, foot, and mouth infections.

    The number of out-patients with hand, foot, and mouth infections was fivefold higher than the number of hospitalised patients, Nga said.

    The incidences, especially at schools, are expected to continue as some sick children have not been strictly isolated at home...

    About 42,700 hand, foot, mouth disease cases detected in nine months

    HCM CITY ? Việt Nam detected more 12,200 hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) patients nationwide last month, according to latest statistics by the Ministry of Health.

    In southern provinces, the number of patients dramatically increased in August and September, by about 50 per cent compared to previous months.

    HCM City?s Pasteur Institute reported that 6 children have died of the disease in southern provinces.

    In the first nine months of this year, a total of 42,700 infections were reported nationwide, of which 21,000 have been hospitalised.

    Since earlier this year, southern Đồng Nai Province has detected more than 4,000 people infected with HFMD, of which 90 per cent were children. Notably, many districts reported 500 new cases a week, many of which were serious.

    In B?nh Dương Province, 478 cases were discovered in August, nearly double against previous months.

    Meanwhile, HCM City?s Preventive Health Centre said that the number of HFMD patients tended to increase in August and September with over 200 cases, even 300, hospitalised every week.

    The city, at present, had a total of 18,700 infectious cases, the centre said...

      Hand-foot-mouth disease likely to see complicated developments: ministry

      Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long has voiced concern over the complicated development of hand-foot-mouth disease in the coming days if preventive measures are not effectively adopted. To date, all provinces and cities across the country have reported multiple cases of this infectious disease, Lao Dong newspaper reported...

      ...Data from the General Department of Preventive Medicine, under the ministry, show that the country reported 53,529 infected people during the year up to September, down 25.3% year-on-year. Of these, over 25,800 cases were admitted to hospitals, down some 20% versus the year-ago period, and six people died of the disease in five provinces and cities in the south.

      However, HCMC, Hanoi, Long An, Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Danang and Quang Ngai have seen a surging number of hand-foot-mouth patients in recent weeks...

        Cases of HFM escalating in Mekong delta

        Lately, the Mekong delta has seen the surge of Hand-foot-mouth (HFM) infection cases; it is highly likely to become epidemic.

        HFM, a contagious viral infection common in infants and young children, in the Mekong delta develops as per a certain period. Normally, the disease breaks out in early September and lasts to December. September and October have highest cases of infections.
        Deputy Director of the Department of Health in Can Tho City of the Mekong delta Dr. Nguyen Trung Nghia said that by middle of October, Can Tho had 720 HFM infection cases. Districts of Cai Rang, Binh Thuy, Thot Not, Vinh Thanh have the most infection cases; most of them are kids under five.
        In Can Tho Children Hospital, over 1,300 kids had hospitalized by middle of October. For instance, the hospital?s Infectious Ward received over 200 kid inpatients meanwhile the hospital has 70 beds; subsequently, the hospital converted lobby and canteen into treatment room.
        Worse, two ?four kids stayed in one bed.
        Likewise, 77 cases of HFM were reported in September in Vinh Long Province but it escalated to 302 cases in middle of October. Most districts in the province recorded more cases of infections...

          Children Hospital saves two serious HFM kids

          Yesterday, the Ho Chi Minh City Children Hospital 1 announced it has saved two serious hand-foot-mouth kids.

          The two kids who were suffering cardiovascular collapse and shock were transferred from a local infirmary in Mekong delta. They were at risk of dead without timely treatment.

          The 2-year-old toddler hailing from the Mekong delta province of Ca Mau who was receiving treatment in Cai Nuoc Hospital but his condition did not abate.
          He suffered complications in brain, respiratory system, and heart. Because his condition developed worse, Cai Nuoc Hospital transferred him to the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital...
