    University officials have reported more than 60 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease, a viral infection most commonly associated with children under five years old.

    This disease is caused by virus? of the Enterovirus variety, a non-polio strain of virus called Coxsackie A16.

    ?This is the first time significant numbers of cases of hand, foot and mouth disease have occurred on campus,? McKinley Health Center Director Dr. Robert Palinkas, said. ?Cases among college age people are pretty rare.?...

      CHAMPAIGN ? The hand, foot and mouth disease cluster at the University of Illinois has dwindled to "close to nothing," according to Dr. Robert Palinkas, director of the UI McKinley Health Center.

      "We're hopeful that, because the student population is going to be relatively low until mid-to-late January, that this cluster has probably reached the end of its line," Palinkas said.

      Monday marked the 13th day without a new case, he said.

      There were 60 case of hand, foot and mouth disease from the start of the fall semester through mid-October, and the cluster continued to grow to 130 cases until the last new one, Palinkas said...
