Hand-foot-mouth disease breaks out in the South
    15:04' 08/04/2009 (GMT+7)

VietNamNet Bridge ? The number of hand-foot-mouth patients that are children at the HCM City-based Children?s Hospital 1 is 25 at present. Doctors said this dangerous disease is spreading rapidly.

The hospital?s chief of the Infection and Mental Disease Ward, Truong Huu Khanh, said the number of patients was between 10-15 two weeks ago. At present, the number of hand-foot-mouth patients is increasing.
This included both those who came to the hospital for examinations as well as resident patients. The hospital received some patients with cardiovascular complications.

Other hospitals in the southern provinces of Dong Nai and Binh Duong also reported the rise of hand-foot-mouth patients who were children.

According to health experts, this disease often reaches its peak in October, but the disease often breaks out as of April. The disease attacks children of less than three years old. Patients that catch virus Entero 71 can suffer brain and heart complications.

Hand, foot and mouth disease on the rise among children

    (22-05-2009)

HCM City ? Cases of hand, foot and mouth disease are rising in HCM City.

The number of infected children admitted to the city?s Paediatrics Hospital No 1 was up to three times higher than during the same period last year, said the head of its Neurology and Infectious Diseases Ward, Truong Huu Khanh.

"On Friday, three of the 50 children stricken with the disease were in a serious condition."

Up to half were from the city and the rest from provinces such as Dong Nai, Long An, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, Tay Ninh and An Giang.

Nguyen Thi Thu Thao, from Cu Chi District, had a child hospitalised with the disease. She said she moved her child to a lobby to avoid stuffy conditions as four to five patients were sharing a room because of the outbreak.

Dang Thi Tuoi, from Vinh Long Commune, had a child seriously ill with the disease. At the ward?s emergency room, two children shared a bed.

A dozen to 16 children were admitted daily to the city?s Paediatrics Hospital No 2, said Tran Thi Thuy, deputy head of its Neurology and Infectious Diseases Ward.

She said the hospital treated 37 cases of the disease from the city last week when there were also two children sharing a bed in the ward. There had been no further admissions this week.

Khanh said the outbreak was later than usual. Peaks were usually during the dry seasons from March to May and September to December.

This year, it started in April and was predicted to end by next month.

Khanh said 30 per cent of the patients are infants and children who were at kindergartens.
To help prevent the disease spreading, parents should take children to hospital if they notice symptoms such as sores in the mouth, fever or a rash with blisters.

Parents and caretakers must implement hygienic methods when preparing food and drinks for children, he said.

Drugs don?t work on the rash and can make diagnosis harder. The disease develops quickly and in more serious cases can be fatal, Khanh said.

There is no specific vaccine for the disease, which studies suggest is caused by the intestinal virus, enterovirus 71 (EV 71). ? VNS

City sees sudden increase of hand, foot and mouth disease

The number of children infected with hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) rose suddenly last week, children hospitals No. 1 & 2 and Tropical Hospital in HCM City recently announced.
A doctor examines a child patient at the Children's Hospital No.2

Dr. Truong Huu Khanh, head of the Infection and Neurology Department at Children?s Hospital No.1, said that his department had daily received more than 20 children with HFMD.

Among them were five cases with serious nerve complications and needed respirators to breath, he added.

Although a HFMD epidemic has not broken out, the city has recorded five deaths due to the disease since the beginning of the year, said the city?s Preventive Health Center.

The peak season for HFMD usually falls in September, said Dr. Nguyen Dac Tho, director of the Preventive Health Center.

If children present symptoms including erythematous macules and blisters in the mouth, palm or sole of the feet, parents should take them to the health centers for treatment, he added.

Hospitals overcrowded by hand-foot-mouth, respiratory disease

The Respiratory Department at Children?s Hospital No.1 is so crowded that mothers have to care for their children in the corridor.
Hand, foot and mouth has been more severe this year and is flooding hospitals with children, as are respiratory diseases, doctors in Ho Chi Minh City said.

Nearly half of inpatient children at Children?s Hospital No.?s Infection ? Mental Health Department on Friday were hospitalized with hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) and three of them were assisted with respirators.

Truong Huu Khanh, head of the department, said the department emergency room had received several HFMD children in severe condition for several days straight.

?The children have complications with their nervous, circulatory and respiratory systems, including breathing difficulties and high blood pressure.?

HFMD patients also top the list at the Children?s Hospital No.2, with 55 admitted Friday, including seven in the emergency room.

Tran Thi Thuy, deputy head of the Infection Department at the hospital, said late September and early October was the prime time for HFMD.

Doctors said more children were catching the disease and developing more critical conditions this year than in previous years.

The 80-bed Children?s Hospital 1 was keeping more than 200 respiratory inpatients on Friday.

Tran Anh Tuan, head of the hospital Respiratory Department, said changes in the climate have caused many children under 1 year old to catch pneumonia and bronchitis.

Doctors have also warned about the high threat of dengue fever in children this month.

Le Bich Lien, head of the Dengue Fever Department at Children?s Hospital No.1, said the rate of dengue infections had lost steam this week but could return even stronger, depending on the weather and the effectiveness of prevention measures.

There have been years in which the disease has peaked in November and December, Lien said.

Call for health centres to fight hand, foot and mouth disease
            13:00' 16/10/2009 (GMT+7)

VietNamNet Bridge ? HCM City's Health Department has called for preventive health centres in all districts of HCM City to combat a recent rise in hand, foot and mouth disease.

As of September there were 466 children reported with hand, foot and mouth disease, an increase of 62 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Le Truong Giang, deputy head of the department, told a meeting of city health officials yesterday, October 15, that the disease had risen significantly across the city because efforts had focused on the A/H1N1 pandemic.

The department and leaders of preventive health centres at various districts discussed citywide epidemics of hand, foot and mouth disease, dengue fever and A/H1N1 flu at the meeting.

As of September there were 466 children reported with hand, foot and mouth disease, an increase of 62 per cent compared to the same period last year, according to Deputy Director of the city's Preventive Health Centre Nguyen Dac Tho.

The city has had 2,080 cases of the disease with five fatalities during the first nine months of the year, Tho said.

He asked health officials working at district-level health centres to check schools and kindergartens across the city to prevent outbreaks.

Meanwhile, the city saw a decline in the number of people infected with dengue fever due to a decrease in mosquito density, Tho added.

There were 9,396 people infected with dengue fever during the first nine months of the year, a decline of 2.5 per cent compared to the same period last year. There have been 10 fatalities reported this year so far in the city.

The disease is still prevalent in some outlying districts, including Thu Duc, Nha Be, Binh Chanh, Binh Tan, Tan Binh and Hoc Mon despite a large a0mount of chemical spraying to kill mosquito larvae. The disease in HCM City is expected to peak next month.

Le Thanh Hai, director of the city's Preventive Health Centre, said outlying districts were usually worst hit by epidemics because of the high number of lodging houses, poor living conditions and environmental problems.

Hai also said ineffective chemical spraying was to blame for a failure to protect residents. For example, nearly 1,000 litres of chemicals was sprayed in Thu Duc district but it was worst hit by the disease.

The number of A/ H1N1 flu cases has dropped, but continues at some spots in the city. Supervision will be tightened at lodging houses and schools, while tests for the flu will be carried out at the city's Preventive Health Centre.
