Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease confirmed at Pueblo day care center

    Story By: Bea Karnes
    Source: KOAA

A child who attends the day care center at Colorado State University-Pueblo has a confirmed case of Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease, an affliction that causes painful blisters in the mouth and sores and rashes on other parts of the body.

The child will be kept out of day care for the next six weeks in an effort to stop the spread of the disease. However, the parents of other children who attend the day care center have been warned to watch their children for symptoms. The disease begins with a fever, poor appetite, malaise or a sore throat. Then it gets nasty. Painful blisters or sores develop in the mouth, typically on the tongue, gums and inside of cheeks. Next comes a rash that sometimes blisters. The rash is typically on the palms of hands and soles of feet, but can also spread elsewhere.

Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease is usually seen in children under the age of 10. Adults are often carriers without showing symptoms. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that the virus remains in the body weeks after symptoms disappear, and it can be spread at any time.

Rare complications include viral meningitis and encephalitis, a swelling of the brain that can cause permanent brain damage or death.
