From February to 3 July 2008, 125 cases of acute neurological syndrome, clinically compatible with enterovirus infection, were reported in 11 of 21 municipalities in Montenegro (population 646,782). All reported cases were hospitalized.

The majority of cases (110 [88%] of 125) has been reported in non-costal areas.

The highest number of cases has been reported in the province of Podgorica (69 [55%] of 125), where the incidence peaked in April.

In April, May and June, the total number of reported cases was 32, 34 and 42 per month, respectively.

Cases have primarily been reported among children aged 7 to 14 years (62 [50%] of 125 cases).

Enterovirus ECHO6 infection was confirmed at the Torlak Institute of Immunology and Virology, Belgrade, Serbia, in 11 samples obtained from 14 patients.

This laboratory is a member of the WHO Global Polio Laboratory Network.

Control efforts are coordinated by the National Institute of Public Health and revolve around information and communication, targeted towards local communities and tourists, and advising basic hygienic measures.

Updates about the evolution of the outbreak are regularly posted on the website of the National Institute of Public Health (www.ijz.cg.yu) in Montenegrin.
