HFMD forces kindergarten to temporarily close

SIBU: The state Health Department has confirmed that a kindergarten in Sarikei was closed for several days due to the Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD).

State health director Datu Dr Zulkifli Jantan said the facility was closed for sanitisation...

1,907 cases recorded in the state thus far, with Miri and Sibu hardest hit

SIBU: The hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) has reached epidemic level in Miri and Sibu divisions.

Miri recorded 564 cases and Sibu 342 cases from the beginning of this year till Feb 23.

The disease is considered epidemic when there are more than 317 cases.

The Sibu Divisional Health Department is alarmed by the 660 per cent increase in cases here when compared to the same period last year, and yesterday it issued a warning to parents to keep children away from crowded public places...

Penang health dept investigating death of 4-year old boy

BUTTERWORTH: The Penang Health Department is investigating a possible Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) outbreak here after a four-year-old boy from Mak Mandin died from fever and throat pain last Saturday.
Director Datuk Dr Lailanor Ibrahim said the boy was earlier warded at one of the private specialist hospitals here after developing fever and throat pains last Monday.

The boy was referred to the Penang Hospital three days later but died of pneunomia on Saturday at 3pm.

Dr Lailanor said a pathologist report revealed that the victim died from lung complications but laboratory tests on signs of adenovirus or the influenza virus - including H1N1 - turned out negative...

Hand, Foot and Mouth disease cases in Sarawak breach 7,000 mark

SIBU: A total of 7,358 cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth disease (HFMD) have been recorded in the state from the beginning of this year till Sept 21.

According to statistics from the Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC) of the state Health Department?s Communicable Disease Control Section, there were 11,903 cases during the corresponding period last year.

Kuching Division registered the most cases at 1,737, followed by Miri (1,712 cases), Sibu (1,022 cases), Samarahan (550 cases), Sarikei (487 cases), Limbang (387 cases), Bintulu (369 cases), Mukah (346 cases), Kapit (309 cases), Sri Aman (222 cases) and Betong (217 cases).

State Health director Datu Dr Zulkifli Jantan told The Borneo Post yesterday that although the number of HFMD cases had breached the 7,000 mark, the situation was under control.

SARAWAK recorded 7,959 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) so far this year and the closure of 17 child care centres and pre-schools.
Minister of Local Government and Community Development Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said the number was 38.8 per cent lower than in the corresponding figure last year.
In his winding-up speech yesterday, Wong said that from the number, 805 cases or 10. 1 per cent were admitted to hospitals with no severe cases or death reported.
