SALMONELLA poisioning has hospitalised 24 people after one of the biggest food poisoning outbreaks in Queensland.

Queensland Health has confirmed 175 people have fallen ill after eating at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on Thursday and Friday.

None of the people that have been hospitalised are in a critical condition, but their conditions vary, with the food poisioning ?exacberating? some pre existing conditions, Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said.

Authorities are working out what food on the ?variable? menu was eaten by the people who fell ill.

On Sunday we were alerted that a number of people had fallen sick after attending a conference at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

This morning I can confirm that we now have 175 people who are unwell and of those, 24 people have required hospitalisation.

And we believe, although it?s very, very early days at this stage, we believe it?s due to Salmonella.

So we?re working very closely with the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre to work through the menus that were served while these people attended and we?re also of course talking to the people who are unwell to work out the commonalities, and just to confirm that it was due to their attendance at the convention centre and that they hadn?t been elsewhere while they?ve been attending that conference.

Food poisoning outbreak now affects 250 education staff

    Pamela Frost | 5th Mar 2015 5:00 AM

THE number of school principals who have fallen ill with food poisoning after a Brisbane conference continues to rise, with 250 people now reporting gastro symptoms.

This includes 30 people in the Darling Downs public health unit, three in Mackay, 18 in Rockhampton, 34 on the Sunshine Coast, 18 in the Wide Bay region, 11 at the West Moreton health unit and 58 in Brisbane.

About 1400 people attended the conference at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre last week and about one in six people have fallen ill, with salmonella believed to be the cause of the sickness.

In just 24 hours the number of sick principals rose from 175 on Tuesday to 250 yesterday.

The Department of Health would not comment any further yesterday but chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young said on Tuesday they believed the sickness was due to salmonella from food.
