(WLUK) -- State health officials reported its first human case of eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus this year.
Laboratory testing confirmed an 18-year-old Eau Claire woman contracted the virus.
Since late July, health officials say six horses in northwestern Wisconsin tested positive for EEE virus.
The virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito, that gets it by feeding on infected birds. The infected mosquito can then spread it to animals and humans.
