    12 September 2024

Havana, Sept 11 (ACN) Cuba witnessed an increase in the number of suspected cases of Dengue and Oropouche Diseases.

In a press conference Wednesday, Hygiene and Epidemiology director Francisco Duran said that the highest Dengue prevalence has been reported in the provinces of Havana, Matanzas (West), Camaguey, Santiago and Guantanamo (East), with observed transmission in 12 localities, 41 municipalities and 46 health districts.
Doctor Duran said that there are Dengue patients hospitalized with some of them in serious conditions.

Meanwhile, more suspected cases of Oropouche disease – caused by the bite of mosquitoes or small flies (midges)—have been detected in 15 provinces, 103 municipalities and 184 health districts.

Most suspected cases have been isolated at home while not showing critical clinical conditions; so far no serious cases or deaths have been reported in Cuba, the doctor said...

Sancti Spíritus Faces Surge in Severe Dengue Cases Among Children
Friday, September 20, 2024 by Claire Jimenez

Sancti Spíritus has experienced a surge in severe dengue cases among pediatric patients (ages zero to 18) over the past two weeks, amid a highly complex epidemiological scenario. The official newspaper Escambray reports that children are arriving at the hospital with alarming signs: high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, abdominal pain, or gum bleeding, requiring intensive care.

The province has been declared in a phase of disease transmission due to the increase in diagnosed cases over the last week.

    Rising Dengue Incidence

"The territory, along with Las Tunas and Ciego de Ávila, showed an increase in the number of dengue cases, consequently raising the incidence rate from 5 to 15.5 per 100,000 inhabitants," the report details. Statistics for both dengue and Oropouche have spiked...

The Cuban doctor and epidemiologist Francisco Durán reported this Thursday that dengue and Oropouche fever continue to be unresolved on the island: "The situation remains the same," he summarized.

In updating about the epidemiological situation on the island, the expert pointed out that both arboviral diseases remain active in the country, where garbage floods the streets and there are no resources to fumigate against mosquitoes.

The increase in dengue cases is notable, with its presence rising from 13 to 14 provinces.

At least 14 provinces report the presence of the disease, an increase compared to the 13 provinces previously affected, as well as 56 municipalities and 51 health areas with active transmission, said Durán.

He pointed out that dengue continues to cause a significant number of cases, many of them severe or critical, with patients admitted to intensive care units...

...The provinces most affected by the increase in cases are Santiago de Cuba and Havana, which present the most complex situation. In these regions, three serotypes of the dengue virus are circulating: serotype 3, serotype 4, and serotype 2, which explains why the same person can fall ill multiple times in a short period.

On the other hand, the Oropouche virus has been detected in all 15 provinces of the country, affecting 110 municipalities....
